Ärende: Junior is born!
=======================
Hi Carol,

 CS> Hehe catchy title!

CS> I fotgot to tell you folks because it happened when my back was really
CS> bad, but we expanded our crockpot collection.

CS> Baby is still used for those small dishes that mostly just one of us
CS> eats (I'm the only carrot creamed soup fan for example). but the Momma
CS> crock now that we no longer have flocks of kids makes too much most of
CS> the time. It's now used only when we have something so big, the size
CS> is required (like a whole pork shoulder).

I never had the Mama sized crockpot but thought about it a few times.
The oval shape is nice for doing a lot of things the round shape has
problems with. Most of the time tho we use the Baby size, only pulling
out the big one now if we have company or I want to do something that
will either give intentional left over or is too big for the Baby pot.

CS> Introducing Junior! Sweet little thing, actually a little smaller
CS> than the old traditional tall sort, with a slight oval shape.
 CS> warm/low/hi settings (I never needed more).

What's the capacity? All the old pots were 3 quart, then they started
making a 5 quart size. We sold our (2nd, first gave up the ghost when
Steve went into the Army) 3 qt round pot and a transformer to a German
friend before we left Berlin. She had lived in the States for a few
years and had become familiar with them but couldn't find one when she
moved back to Germany. When we got to Fort Devens, I got a combo stew
pot, fry pot and crock pot liner--the capacity of that was 3.5 or 4
quarts, not much of an increase. It's the one I still have, but with a
replacement crock pot liner. While we were in AZ, Steve's unit needed a
crock pot to hold cheese sauce or something of that sort for a fund
raising event. He loaned mine and somehow the liner was broken; the
unit bought me a replacement one. The new one was (is) white; they were
a bit hesitant about the color, thinking I'd want the traditional brown.
I told them that the only concern I had was that I had a new liner,
didn't care what color it was.

You got me interested in getting a Baby crock pot, which we did while we
were in HI. We replaced it last fall with one that has both HI and LOW
settings; the first one had no adjustments. Haven't used the new one
yet but will probably soon; it holds enough for a meal for 2 people.
The old one was donated to a resale shop where, hopefully a student
found it and is putting it to good use.

CS> He's full of a deep rich split pea with smoked pork bones right now.
CS> A little too small for making my larger loads of stock, but we've
CS> kinda not made as much of that lately.

And now you can use the bigger one for boiling peanuts while Junior is
cooking the meal. We don't have the storage room for a larger one.
I've seen, and thought about as a replacement for when my larger one
dies, a unit that is composed of a base with 3 inserts--1 qt, 2 qt and 3
qt sizes. It's a thought, especially for a small kitchen, but we'll
make the determination when the time comes.

I mentioned that my unit could be a stew pot or deep fryer. We used it
as a deep fryer a few times the first few years we had it but haven't
used it like that in 10 or more years. We've never used it as a stew
pot; I make stew on the stove top or in the crock pot. (G) It is nice
to have the deep fry basket for blanching veggies for freezing if I need
to.

---
Catch you later,
Ruth
