=================================
Hi Nancy,

NB> the same, as NB>> far as I'm concerned... (G) I guess my snow
NB> tolerance is lowering NB.> with the years... ;)

RH> We've not heard too much from his siblings about the snow amounts this
RH> winter. Steve does have Hulberton listed as one of his "regular
RH> checks" on Weather Underground so we see, from time to time, how
RH> cold/warm it is there. Our tolerance for snow and cold has gone down
RH> quite a bit, especially since we've lived in warmer climates for so
 RH> long.

NB> When my son was living in Phoenix, I used to watch what their temps
NB> and weather were in the newspaper listings... But it didn't really
 NB> give me
NB> much of an idea what it was really like.

And did you water your cactus when the paper reported rain? I know,
reading what the temperature is is, isn't the same as experiencing it.
You don't know the humidity for instance. No way of knowing if it's
good weather for grilling, putting on a soup pot or just having a big
dish of ice cream. (G)

My cold/heat tolerance is
NB> variable... if I'm somewhere for a little while, or if the weather
NB> settles in for a while, I can usually adjust to some extent, although
NB> I usually do do better in adjusting to cold...

We're in our 4th winter since returning from HI. Last year in Savannah
wasn't too bad, overall, but the first year was really cold (in our
minds). We've moved 300 miles north and more inland so are having to
adjust again. By the time we leave NC, we will be somewhat more
adjusted to the cold. Then, too, it was an unusually cold December and
first couple of weeks of January here, according to the weather gurus so
we're not the only ones shivering. Just means I have to make sure we
have enough stuff on hand to make hot, filling meals. In a few months,
it will be cooler but filling meals.

RH> We probably should carry something year round. I could cut up some of
RH> our old jeans and make some sort of a sturdy quilt/throw (hmm, just
RH> had an idea--back a jeans/denim top with a fleece throw, no filler
RH> needed). A couple of those in some sort of stuff sack..........

NB> That sounds like a good plan... :)

Got to get the ambition factor kicked in, and finish my class work for
the J-term.

RH> Steve has given more "formal" reports; I'm adding tidbits of
RH> information here & there to various messages. One thing that is so
RH> surprising about the country is all the crops they can grow, thanks to
RH> modern irrigation methods. We'd see lush fields of green but not even
RH> 1/10 of a mile away there would be prickly pear (the most common type
RH> of cactus we saw) in an uncultivated field. The land is overall desert
RH> but the desert has been made to bloom--and grow a wide variety of
 RH> fruits and vegetables.

NB> Quite amazing... and the contrast between uncultivated and cultivated
NB> points it up all the more. :)

Very much so. And the drive down from the northern part of the country
to the southern was quite something--from a lot of green to much more
brown/grey.

 NB> RH>> ... I don't have the time for a hobby. I have a computer.
NB> NB>> That, of course, is a hobby in and of itself... ;)

RH> Unfortunatly, pulling me away from my sewing until I get caught up.
RH> I'm pretty well caught up with Fido now but trying to maintain a daily
RH> mail check so I don't get too far behind as I catch up on other things.
 RH> Sigh!

NB> Sometimes (usually, actually) one just has to choose which important
NB> thing takes precedence at this moment... A balancing act, to be sure.
 NB> :)

And I need a day that's twice as long.

Catch you later,
Ruth
