Ärende: Xmas gift!
==================
Hi Ruth,

-> RH> mix that showed up here for a while was American Hamburger Spice.

-> RH> I could do when I saw it was crack up.

-> AKA salt and pepper, maybe a breath of onion powder?

 RH> There was more in it, but I forget what. None of it went directly into
 RH> an American hamburger except the salt. I tend to use soy sauce in
 RH> mine, if anything.

We rarely have hamburgers as such. Most ground beef gets mixed with
ground turkey and used as meat balls, meat loaf, etc.
-> He printed something out that he can consult for what the keys
-> correspond to on the Hebrew key board. Ask him about it; he will be

 RH> He already told me. I went and downloaded the Ezra font for the heck
 RH> of it. I rarely type in a word processor and didn't realize this
 RH> machine
 RH> didn't come with one. My old one did. Go figure.

We're proccessing lots of words these days. (G)

-> -> For sure! Street vendors have interesting stuff tho. (G)

-> RH> They do tend to have the fun stuff, and of course the best stories.

-> Every so often our guide would take something from a vendor and try
-> hawking it to us. I don't think he made any sales but he did have some
-> interesting stories.

 RH> I'd be tempted to buy stuff just for the stories.

The stories were not told while he was "hawking" for the vendors. Most
of them were while we were going from one place to another, more as we
were touring various sites.

-> RH> It's in the same vein (ahem) as turquoise and malachite, but it's
 RH> not
->  RH> really either.

-> OK, I've got the idea of what it probably looks like.

 RH> I have some here, but I've never photographed it. This area is
 RH> heavily Jewish, so things turn up on a regular basis.

No surprise. I've got some turquise from when we were in AZ, now a set
of malachite beads from a Bedouin vendor.

-> There were a lot of small shops; a lot of them were 3 walls and a roof,
-> with the 4th side open. I'm sure there was some way to close off a 4th
-> wall for security or weather issues. We bought a replacement umbrella
-> for Steve in Tiberius in a shop that was so small that it had several
-> racks of merchandise outside, in a semi sheltered area. Would have been
-> nce to explore the area in daylight but didn't have that chance.

 RH> Oh well. I've seen stores like that before; there's usually a metal
 RH> curtain thingie that rolls down from under the roof to close it off.

Which we couldn't see from a quick passing on the bus.

-> RH> Me too...mostly, but all this other stuff just sort of creeps in.

-> And some of the other stuff goes in other directions, as I read in the
-> exchanges between you and Carol.

 RH> I try. Some things just decide they don't want to be sold. Then they
 RH> tell me where they do want to go eventually.

I hear you on that one. (G)

-> RH> learn at least a little. I've worked at being a little more fly
 RH> than
->  RH> your average gentile.

-> I grew up in the Catskills, worked at a Jewish camp one summer. I'm more
-> knowledgeable than a lot of folks but still have a long way to go to be
-> really familiar with customs/practices.

 RH> I do OK, but there's always more to learn. There are 360+ laws in
 RH> Torah alone, never mind the customs and stuff added since.

Always some mew information to be added, especially as technology
changes.

-> RH> The fillings on the classic ones often use cottage cheese.
 RH> Applesauce
-> RH> works on those nicely, or on the fruit ones.

-> More good eats; we need to try making whole wheat ones.

 RH> It would work, but the texture will be different. It might even be
 RH> better.

I'll have to make some one of these days. Probably use whole wheat
pastry flour vs the bread type flour.

Catch you later,
Ruth
