=================================
Hi Nancy,

I've taken some time off to finish January Term work. Don't be
surprised if this (and other messages) don't get posted for another day
or so. I've got to finish a journal, then edit it before submitting it
later this week. Second semester starts on Thursday with an evening
class for both of us.

NB> RH>> And did you water your cactus when the paper reported rain? I
NB> know, NB>> Well, I wasn't the one in Phoenix, and I don't have any
NB> cactus... NB>> so... nope, didn't water my cactus... ;) And reading

RH> That's an old joke--someone living outside of AZ is given a cactus and
RH> subscribes to an AZ newspaper, watering the cactus only when the paper
 RH> reports rain.

NB> Thought so... Spoils the joke, but people with cacti in their front
NB> yards in Phoenix have to water them when it doesn't rain, or they look
NB> very sick. I guess they don't have the root systems, nor the access
NB> to deep water that the "wild" desert ones have...

Cactus do have very deep roots but it also take a long time to establish
them. If the front yard sauguaro is one that was taken (illegally) from
the desert, it has to re-establish a root system and will need lots of
water. Did you know they don't start growing their arms until they are
at least 75 years old?

NB> crow NB>> just a little when instead of their usual Sunny forecast,
NB> they'd get NB>> Cloudy... since he always tried to rub it in how much
NB> better their NB>> weather was than ours... (G)

RH> But would you like to live there in the summer? We were up there one
RH> Labor Day week end when the temps averaged about 120. When we lived

NB> I had no interest in living there at all, actually. And those 100+
NB> degree days, humid or not, don't appeal to me at all. :) He finally

That's where we liked the area where we lived better. Less pollution in
the air and you could eat the fish you caught, unlike the ones in the
artificial lake in my sister's housing community.

NB> decided that he hated the summers there about as much as he did the
NB> winters here in upstate NY... (G) I may not like the snow very much,
NB> but I do like the changing seasons, and it isn't nearly as cloudy as
NB> people like to make it out to be, either. :) I figure that if the
NB> sun peeks through even a little that it can't count as a day without
 NB> sun. ;)

We've had grey days that have been warm and sunny days that have been
cold this winter. Another one of the latter is forecast for tomorrow.
The main reason I don't like cold is that it aggrivates my asthma. By
the same token, hot humid days do also.

RH> in Fort Huachuca, we had enough snow and ice to close school for a

NB> When I was a kid, we lived for 4 years in Mississippi... in all that
NB> time it snowed ONCE. Of course, everything shut down... (G) We had
NB> to enjoy it while we could. ;)

Yes, did you make snow ice cream then? Basically, fill a large bowl
with clean snow, stir in some cream, sugar and vanilla until well mixed,
then enjoy. The hard part is findng enough clean snow these days.

RH> I hear you there. I still tire very easily; the oncologist said that's
RH> something I'll always have to deal with from the radiation. If we had
RH> days that were twice as long, would we have twice the number of meals
RH> to cook/eat/clean up after? If so, I'd simplify my cooking for most of
RH> them, having something that took more fuss only once every few days.

NB> Good question... :) I suspect we might just nosh on smaller meals
NB> right along. And would the nights also be twice as long, so that we
NB> could rest these tired bodies of ours...? ;)

Probably the nights would be about half again as long as they are now.
There are some of us who get a lot of work done at night instead of the
day; you know that nights now don't (usually) seem to be as long as
days.

Catch you later,
Ruth
