Sometimes Glen doesn't know, either.  :(  After looking at pictures of
gooseberries, I decided that my memory of 70 years ago was incorrect,
and it was not a gooseberry tree that I used to climb; it was a
mulberry tree.   Anyway, I haven't seen _mulberries_ for a while.
 
Re "Chinese gooseberries", aka kiwi fruit, do you also get "golden
kiwi fruit"?  Several years ago, when in kiwiland I came across a
plantation of vines, and a stall where the fruit was offered for sale.
The main benefit was that the skin was tenderer and less hairy than
that of the usual brown kiwifruit, and so it was easier to eat the
whole fruit.  The flesh was also sweeter.  I tried it, but preferred
the tartness of the older variety.

      Title: Halo Halo
 Categories: Filipino, Desserts, Fruits, Beans, Jello
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
           Red beans cooked with sugar
           Cooked white beans
           Macapuno sport -
           Bananas (plantain or saba,
           Boiled and sliced)
           Jackfruit (if available)
           Nata de coco (if available)
           Jello (any color, but red is
           Always nice), cut into
           Cubes
           Leche flan
           Ice cream for topping
           Any other fruits - papaya,
           Avocado, kiwi, cherries, etc
           Shaved ice
           Haleyang ube
           Milk
           Sugar
 
  Arrange the ingredients in layers in a tall glass. Top with shaved
  ice. Pour in milk. Add sugar. Top with ice cream. Mix. Enjoy.
  
  By the way, if you live in a country where snow is available, try
  using pure driven snow instead of shaved ice. It works, but be
  careful of environmental pollutants though.
  
  This is my favorite dessert of all, besides the leche flan; some of
  these ingredients you can get in an oriental market. The fruits can
  be from a can that is sold in the oriental stores, I don't think you
  can get them fresh.
