Ärende: RE: GIDDAY  00209
=========================
Howdy Glen!
->
->  ->  ->  HN> How'd I do on the Ozzy accent???
-> -> -> S'easy. All you do is to remember not to open your mouth more
than 2
-> -> -> mm to stop the flies going in, use your tongue as little as possible
-> -> -> when making sounds and let most of the sound come out your
nose,
->  ->  ->
->  ->  HN> Gidday...giiiiiday...gidddddai...ok I think I
->  ->  HN> have it!
->  ->
->  -> Bai Jove!  I think he's got it!
->  ->
-> HN> Now you'll be taking the mickey out of me!
->
-> Nah! Would I take the mickey? (One of the favourite Australian
-> sports.)
->
I have a friend in Bathurst who's favorite pastime
is either consuming stubbies, or taking the mickey out
of his mates! (grin)

-> -> -> modern high speed ones. Did they still use steam locomotives
then?
-> -> HN> Some were still in service then...but most of them
-> -> HN> got destroyed during the war which had only
-> -> HN> been over for less than 20 years then. Most
-> -> HN> were pretty new and even running on electricity.
->  ->
-> -> Railways and rolling stock were always considered a prime target for
-> -> bombers. When I was a schoolboy, all locomotives were steam. Some,
-> -> dating back to the 19th century, were still used for shunting. Such a
-> -> contrast to travelling on the Shinkansen in Japan in the mid-1980s.
-> -> The carriages were fitted with a speedometer, so that the passengers
-> -> could marvel as it passed the 200 km/h mark, usually settling at 220.
->  ->
-> HN> When I lived in France there were still
-> HN> signs of WWII to be seen often.
-> HN> My gymnasium at school was a
->  HN> former luftwaffe hanger...and still
-> HN> had lots of bullet holes in the
->  HN> roof and walls.
->
-> Throughout Europe there are many buildings showing the scars of war.
-> Where my friend lives in Perchtoldsdorf, near Vienna, there is a tower
-> which still has a 17th century Turkish cannonball embedded in it. His
-> house is pock-marked from Russian bullets. In Budapest there are
-> buildings with German bullet holes fired from one direction, and
-> Russian ones from the opposite side.
->
Not a desirable abode at the time I suppose!

-> HN> I like bento boxes and bento lunches.
->
-> They make very healthy school lunches.
->
-> -> One of the most useless things I was taught at university was how to
-> -> set the slide valves of a steam engine.
->  ->
-> HN> Would not be useless if you had a
->  HN> steam engine though!
->
-> The above-mentioned, English born, Austrian resident friend makes
-> model steam locomotives, and was very proud that his was faster than
-> those of the other local model makers. Now he has invited me to his
-> 80th birthday party, so he can show me his latest steam speedster.
->
That is a fun hobby, I have a model
train group that shares the same
floor (basement) where my workspace
is located (not my painting studio) and
one of the fellows is very into making his
own little steam engines...he was a boeing
engineer before he retired and has lots
of machine making equipment in his home.
not a hobby an average bloke could take
up I suppose!

-> -> On a completely unrelated note, do you know what is the fastest
-> -> recorded ball speed achieved by a baseball pitcher? Lately a speed
-> -> gun has been introduced to cricket. The world record is held by a
->  -> Pakistani, at about 164 km/h.
->  ->
->  HN> That's about 102 mph and would be a
-> HN> record here as well. I am pretty sure
-> HN> that Nolan Ryan holds the world record
->  HN> for fastest pitch...and I think it was
->  HN> just over 100mph...still I would not
-> HN> want to face anyone thowing at me
->  HN> at 100mph or more!
->
-> I asked because I wondered if bowling was faster or slower than
-> pitching. ("Throwing" is a serious crime in the game of cricket.)
->
-> Cricketers were wearing groin protectors 100 years before they adopted
-> head protecting helmets. As a lady friend pointed out, it shows the
-> relative importance that men give to the parts of their bodies.
->
ha! having been hit (with baseballs during a game) in both
places, I know which I'd protect first!!
chat with you soon!
