Intermittent warfare has been a way of life for that region of Europe
for thousands of years.  Something that Australia has been isolated
from (except for the 64 air raids on northern Australia during WW2).

 -> model steam locomotives, and was very proud that his was faster than
 -> those of the other local model makers.  Now he has invited me to his
 -> 80th birthday party, so he can show me his latest steam speedster.

Perhaps there is something about model steam engines which appeals to
such people.  My friend used to work for English Electric on the
electronics for the Blue Steel nuclear rocket.
 
I have just been listening to an interview with the woman who has
introduced the US origin, "Food Rescue Program" to Australia, under
the name, "Oz Harvest".  The idea is to collect good food which would
otherwise be wasted, and use it to feed homeless or disadvantaged
people who depend on charity organisations for their meals.

Some 20% of food purchased here finishes up thrown out, uneaten.
The law has had to be amended to absolve the donors from litigation.
Most sources are private functions, rather than restaurants, but now
some supermarkets are joining in and donating just time-expired
perishables.  These and other donated foods are on the Salvation Army
and other tables feeding homeless people within hours of the food
becoming available for collection by a fleet of refrigerated vans.

So far, Oz Harvest is operating with over 100 vans in Sydney and some
major cities in the East, with the intention of expanding throughout
Australia.  It is in the interests of donor s/markets and similar to
support the organisation, as they save garbage dumping costs.
