These guys had already turned from the darker green to the pale shade of green
tint that indicates ripeness. If left on the bushes much longer they'd fall to
the ground of their own weight.

That's why I like yellow pine for construction.

Well, I was 16 and it was a summer job ... I learned a lot doing it. But, the
oak was my Dad and Granddad's doing. I just had to figure out how to deal with
it. I started with drilling pilot holes when a 16d nail struck squarely head on
would penetrate about 4 mm or less into the wood then collapse like an
accordion or concertina.

Too bad the people in Haiti hadn't built out of that sort of material. 

As a side note: The trailer park in which I live is owned by Sangamo
Construction Group. The maintenance guy is a younger person who used to hang
around my race-car shop and play gopher for us. He was sent to Haiti to check
on some ongoing projects that Sangamo had around Port au Prince and found that
among other things the 11 highway overpasses that Sangamo built (under the
auspices of US AID) some years ago had survived the earthquake intact ...
although not all the highways they connected had fared so well.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Haitian French Toast
 Categories: Brunch, Breads, Citrus, Eggs
      Yield: 6 Servings
 
      1 lb Loaf French Bread
      1 c  Orange juice
    1/2 c  Whipping cream
      2 lg Eggs
      1 ts Ground cinnamon
    1/4 c  Sugar
        ds Nutmeg
      3 tb Butter
           Powdered sugar
           Maple sugar
 
  Cut loaf ends from bread/reserve. Cut remaining loaf into 1
  1/2 inch thick slices and let stand uncovered, 4 hours to
  overnight. 

  In 9"x13" pan, combine orange juice, cream, eggs, cinnamon,
  sugar and nutmeg. With a wire whip, whisk until well
  blended. Lay bread in pan. Turn several times until all
  liquid is absorbed, 3-5 minutes. 

  Melt butter in 12" to 14" frying pan over medium heat. Put
  soaked bread into frying pan. Cook, turning as needed, until
  richly browned on both sides (5 minutes).

  Dust with powdered sugar.

  Makes 4-8 servings.
