DD> visited the web site I didn't know that there was a second location.

ML> Gourmet - so Ruth Reichl walks into your restaurant. Are you
ML> going to screw up in front of her?

It wasn't Ruthie. And not Maeve Binchy, either. Possibly Jonathan Gold or
Calvin Trillin - I know, I know, both well-known, easily recognisable food
writers. But, it may have been in a reminiscence article from someone not
really a "food writer". I don't really want to mine my archive of Gourmet
magazines to find the exact article.

ML> Roadfood - I'm surprised by "mixed" but would imagine that the
ML> negatives went like "Huh, who's going to spend $50 on a steak?"
ML> Take with a grain of salt, as with everything Sternish.

Roadfood is a discussion forum. Jane & Mikie jump in on subjects from
time-to-time but in this case there was a thread about "Best Steak Houses" and
a sub-thread (among many) about Peter Luger's ... which also never mentioned
the Long Island location.

ML> Various cooking shows - you know how I feel about the airheads
 ML> on various cooking shows.

They're not all airheads ... and especially weren't in the early days of TVFN.
I believe one of the favourable reviews was from David Rosengarten. Another was
(I am sure on this one) from Michael Lomonaco who used to run Windows on the
World until Khalid Shaikh Mohammed's nefarious plot came to fruition.

ML> Sure, I'll eventually get there, but I'm in no particular rush.

ML> When did you make this up?

 ML> [See, Burt?]

DD> I see I have failed to date this one. Must be from some time ago.

ML> You sent it to me in 2003 (as my records show - I'm on a
 ML> record-accessing kick).

--- CUT ---

ML> Sour cream is a staple in a hungarian kitchen. Practically every
ML> meal has something made with sour cream, soup, salad, goulash,
ML> pancakes, vegetables, desserts and sauces. This simple sauce is a
ML> mainstay when ever we have hungarian sausage, or boiled beef.

This is from before I began my current system of codifying my recipes. This on
qualified for "Uncle Dirty Dave's Archives" when I posted it. It has since
moved into "Uncle Dirty Dave's Kitchen" status.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Tomato & Zucchini Gratin
 Categories: Squash, Vegetables, Breads, Cheese
      Yield: 6 servings

      3 lb Ripe plum tomatoes
      3 lb Firm zucchini
    1/2 c Dried bread crumbs
    1/4 c Freshly-grated Parmesan cheese
2 tb Chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
      1 tb Chopped fresh thyme
      1 tb Chopped fresh oregano
           Salt & fresh-ground pepper
    1/4 c Fruity olive oil

Slice the tomatoes and zucchini into 1/4-inch thick round
slices, as uniformly as you can. On a cookie sheet or
ovenproof platter, overlap the tomato and zucchini in a
decorative pattern, like red and green shingles on a
gingerbread house. Blend all the dry ingredients together,
then scatter them evenly over the tomatoes and zucchini.
Sprinkle the olive oil on top and bake in a 375øF degree
oven until golden and crusty, about 20 minutes.

Present the platter or sheet at the table, using a cake
server or metal spatula to slide several overlapping pieces
  onto each diner's plate.
