ML> A major security error. Why did the previous tour not report
 ML> the person missing?
GJ> I should point out that this was before your 9-11 incident. It is
GJ> likely that a report was made of a missing passenger on the earlier
GJ> tour, but as mobile phones were not universal in those days the news
GJ> had not got to the tour guide on the second bus.

ML> I should have thought the incident of sufficient gravity that
ML> the driver could perhaps have gotten out of the bus to place
 ML> a call.

Apart from the bus driver there was a lady sheep-dog/head counter.
When she found the discrepancy she counted and re-counted several
times, looking increasingly worried each time, then got the driver to
count also.

 ML> It did surprise me
GJ> at the time, but no one admitted to any breach of regulations, however.
ML> But behind the scenes, someone probably had to pay in some way.

I feel sure that someone did. Our sheepdog would have been relieved
that it was not her.

ML> I wonder who would bear the brunt of the official wrath - the
ML> idiot tourist or the idiot tour guide.

When I first went to Singapore, in 1971, the local shop keepers looked
upon tourists as one time visitors, to be ripped off to whatever extent
the shop keepers thought they could get away with. They were not very
friendly, possibly as a hangover from WW2 and before. Then Lee Kwan
Yew came on the scene and decided that Singapore should become rich,
and tourists should be attracted and enticed to return, so he told
everyone to smile and be nice to tourists. So they did, and prospered.
As potential sources of wealth for the country, tourists are treated
with great consideration, as long as they abide by the rules, and flush
the public toilets. ($50 fine for not doing so!) So, I would expect
the tour guide has been delegated to cleaning and disinfecting the MRT
escalators at 4am. (I have seen them doing that.)

ML> Anyway, I don't think that the security guys address the easiest
ML> way to get unauthorized people into the airports - the self-print
ML> boarding pass. One can merely alter the name field on a legitimate
ML> document and print out as many as one chooses. It might seem a

Hmmm. The last time I flew, on Virgin to Perth, I had booked and paid
on-line, and printed out my ticket with code number. However, when I
got to the check-in counter I just mentioned my name to the girl, and
produced a driver's licence ID. No self-printed boarding pass or code
number was needed.

ML> little strange if suddenly seven swarthy sandhogs showed up at
ML> security with passes for a particular flight, but with some small
ML> tweakage this issue could be circumvented.

They might think it was all part of a movie.

To my mind, one of the most likely targets for people intent on
being nasty to others would be the Channel Tunnel. A truckload of
explosive could be detonated there, in the middle, with the potential
of outclassing the World Trade Centre affair. The whole of the tunnel
would be flooded, drowning all occupants who hadn't been fired out the
ends by the initial explosion.

      Title: Tunnel Of Fudge Cake
 Categories: Newsgroups, May.rec
      Yield: 4 Servings

           ;CAKE
  1 3/4 c Sugar
  1 3/4 c Butter
           ;softened
      6 Eggs
      2 c Powdered sugar
  2 1/4 c Flour
    3/4 c Unsweetened cocoa
      2 c Chopped walnuts
           ;nuts are essential for
           ;success of this recipe
           ;GLAZE
    3/4 c Powdered sugar
    1/4 c Unsweetened cocoa
      4 ts Milk
           ;to 6ts

In large bowl combine sugar and butter; beat until light and fluffy.
Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually add
powdered sugar, blend well. By hand gradually stir in flour and
remaining ingredients until well blended. Spoon batter into greased
and floured 10-inch tube pan or 12-cup fluted tube pan; spread
evenly. Bake at 350 degrees F for 58-62 minutes. (Because of the
tunnel of fudge you will not be able to test for doneness; correct
temperature and time is essential). Cool upright in pan for 1 hour,
invert onto serving plate and cool completely. In small bowl combine
glaze ingredients. Spoon over top of cake. Serves 16. Store tightly
  covered.
