Sort of what happened here a couple generations earlier. The
question is why the East Asians did so well as a group, and I
suppose the answer is that the ones who had the persistence,
initiative, and savvy to succeed in an unfamiliar environment
are the same ones who had the persistence, initiative, and
savvy to leave the old country in the first place.

Indeed. The airline people I know to say hi to number in the
low triple digits; the ones I actually interact with in more
than a customerly way number in the low double digits; and
control tower people I know to say hi to number in the single
digits. I only actually interact with one control tower guy, and
that's only because I periodically dine with him and his wife.

The only difference between these is that at the former you are
still likely to be served your head on a platter.

The worst one I heard was at LAX - after he called on a Delta flight
to slow to a certain speed, the pilot said, rather languidly I thought
considering the seriousness of the issue, "if we did that we'd fall
out of the sky."

I enjoy Hong Kong quite a lot. Bear in mind that the Regal Hotel
that is attached to the terminal has (or at least did 5 years ago)
a genius dim sum chef.

 Jakarta used to be the pits, but now
 GJ> is OK.  Manila is somewhat better than it used to be.  The atmosphere
 GJ> of Davao is permeated by the aroma of durian, offered by vendors

Jakarta is apparently trying to approach the 20th century.
Manila, I understand, not so much.

Chinese Chicken and Rice Salad
cat: salad, main
servings: 4 to 6

1/2 c vegetable oil
1/3 c rice vinegar
1/4 c Soy Vay Veri Veri Teriyaki
- or Soy Vay Island Teriyaki
1 Tb sesame oil
3 c cold cooked rice
2 c cold diced cooked chicken
8 oz can water chestnuts, drained and cut into strips
1/2 c toasted slivered almonds
1/3 c sliced green onions

Combine oil, vinegar, Teriyaki and sesame oil. Add remaining
ingredients and toss well to coat. Chill several hours,
stirring twice.
