========================================================================
Hola Ruth!

-> -> hn> First week back was tough for her, the
-> -> hn> kids had been kids, and the substitutes
-> -> hn> had written long notes on the behavior
->
-> -> Bummer! Sounds like it was a succession of subs--not the best for the
-> -> kids as most of the subs were nothing but babysitters. Of course with
->
-> hn> Nope both subs (one before Spring Break, and one the day after)
-> hn> were hand picked by Anne, and they know the kids
-> hn> as well....and that's why Anne got the detailed
-> hn> notes, and was able to address the misbehaviors
->
-> Much better than I thought. AFAIK, very few public shools let you pick
-> your own sub. Most of then, when you let them know you need a sub, just
-> start dialing down the list until one agrees to come in. My dad did sub
-> work one time--got called for anything from Home Ec to English. In the
-> latter, the teacher had given the kids a list of vocab words & meanings;
-> trouble is, the meanings were completly unrelated to the word. He
-> taught them how to use a dictionary to look up the proper meaning.
-> IIRC, there were quite a few misspellings in the list as well.
->
It's good that Anne's disctrict has a policy where
you can have a list of "preferred substitutes" and
she often will call them at home to see if they are
available before she goes online to arrange for a
sub. As for the english teacher your dad subbed for,
it's folks like that staying in the profession that give
teaching a bad rap.

-> hn> when she returned. The kids do love her, and they
-> hn> still give HER a tough time. She's got a tough bunch
-> hn> of kids who range from very gifted but with no social
-> hn> skills whatever to Autistic, and ADHD to such an extreme
->  hn> that it's tough to hold a conversation with the kid! I don't
-> hn> know how she does it myself....I'd be a wreck in a week!!
->
-> That is quite a range of kids to work with. Are there classroom aides
-> to help? I hope so; it sounds like she really has to fine tune IEPs for
-> the kids. Back when we went to school, there were no IEPs for most
-> classes, probably only the special needs one. In the others, it was sink
-> or swim.
->
IEP's are a relatively new invention, when "mainstreaming"
became popular back in the late 80's and early 90's. Now it's
used more as a matter of budget control than as a real
benefit to the student. When Anne was a special ed teacher
she was up to her ears in em, now she's on the committee for
those in her class who are on IEP's but doesn't have to do all
the drafting and design work she did before.
->
-> -> So hopefully some sort of resolution can be reached. Is the primary
-> -> doctor one who would be a strong advocate on your behalf?
->
->  hn> Very strong and that's a great help!
->
-> Good, primary care doctors can have a lot of influence if needs be and
-> if they are strong enough advocates. Sounds like you have a good one.
->
He is good, and very knowledgeable about just
about everything...and he knows all the local
doctors as well...and tells her which ones
to go to for the best information and treatment.

-> is the least damaging of their options, but -> hn> they still can't
-> resist dragging their feet a bit. hn> ->
->
-> -> Sigh! So will Anne be retiring at the end of the school year?
->
-> -> hn> Not likely! Hopefully today she'll be able to make hn> the
-> appointment for the shot of cortisone in the hn> back.
->
->
-> That doesn't sound like fun! Do something extra special for her
-> tonight, maybe another candy bar?
->
The shot itself won't be fun (coming up this week) but
the projected results are. If it does what they hope
it will do, (a series of three shots will follow) she'll
be really on her way "out of the woods" on this
problem. (we are keeping our fingers crossed!!)

-> -> hn> They both have the potential for very
-> -> hn> nasty side effects. She's gonna lose her
->
-> -> Got lots of pretty hats & scarves lined up? I think Steve was glad I
-> -> didn't lose my hair. I'd asked if he would go bald also; his response
-> -> was on the order of "it wouldn't be a pretty sight if I did.".
->
-> hn> Anne and her sisters and brother are all
-> hn> trying to be very hopeful, and optimistic.
->  hn> I'm more realistic with Cancer.
->
-> With that one in particular, realistic is the better way to go, even if
-> it's the harder one. But, hope and pray; miracles do happen.
->
Yep, they do...but you can't count on
getting one.

-> -> I know, but respect your physical limits. Painkillers, even with
-> -> chocolate, every time there's a game, aren't worth the free admission.
->
-> hn> Actually it seems like the game is ok
-> hn> and my knee seems to do alright when
->  hn> I am moving around...but it's tough
-> hn> to sleep at night because that's when
-> hn> it decides to really start throbbing!
->
-> I know the feeling, all too well. Then if it's a pain killer you need
-> to take with food, you have to be careful not to eat so much you can't
-> sleep because of that. I went to the doctor today as a follow on for a
-> couple of med changes we made last month. Going to keep up with them
-> which means a light munchie before bed time still. A lot of times I'll
-> grab a small cup of yogurt.
->
I'm trying to figure out a way to
work it so I don't have to gobble
pills. So far I'm still exploring options,
most of them don't work as well as
the meds,....but I'm hoping!

chat with you soon!
