Hello Ruth,

RH> So, now your oven is clean and you can see what's baking. Good going!
GJ> It helped that the cover glass over the oven light is also clean now.
 RH> That would be a bit of a help there. It wasn't the bulb going dim;
RH> rather the cover for it was getting dirtier with each use of the oven.

The unaccustomed glare is positively blinding!

GJ> I have tried other cleaning agents, but that was the first successful
GJ> clean in nearly 20 years.

RH> It's a whole lot safer to have a clean oven than a dirty one too.

We found the oven in one rented place had a pool of oil underneath it.
Definitely a fire hazard, so it pays to check and clean.

RH> We've not lived anywhere over 8 years so none of my ovens have gotten
RH> as dirty as yours. The longest in any one place was in AZ; that was
RH> about 6 weeks short of 8 years. Shortest time would be the 2 months in
RH> temporary housing there, followed by the 3 1/2 months in San Angelo,
RH> TX. But starting from when we left Berlin in July of 92, whenever we
RH> moved, we paid someone to do the final cleaning, including the oven.
RH> Made things just that one bit less stressful on us. Anywhere we lived
RH> longer than 6 months (after Berlin) and the oven would have had at
RH> least one cleaning before we moved. Of course the longer we stayed
RH> anywhere, the more the oven was cleaned.

That history got me reminiscing, so I listed the places where I have
lived, not including hotels. It totalled 7 temporary and 2 owned
homes in Australia, 8 government houses in PNG and 2 temporary and 1
owned home in the Philippines. My present owned house is second only
to the time spent growing up, in my parents' house. While working as
a volunteer overseas I have lived in motels and houses for 1 to 5
months at a time in Indonesia, Vanuatu, Fiji and Nauru.

RH> It's a definate help to my breathing. BTW, did you know you could
RH> clean the oven racks easily? Spray them with the oven cleaner or put a
RH> cup of ammonia in a plastic trash bag & add the racks. (DON'T USE BOTH

I regularly wash oven trays and wire racks, so they are not a problem.

GJ> I sometimes get Skype calls to help grandchildren with homework, and I
GJ> do travel around and see most of them from time to time. I still
GJ> haven't seen the latest one (2 months old) in Alice Springs, or the
GJ> first great-grandchild (4 months) in Auckland (NZ).

RH> So when are you planning those trips? Robert hasn't asked for any

After I return from Europe in June, I have my cataract operation, then
I will look at going North to get away from the Winter, so will
probably call into Alice Springs then. NZ will have to wait until
closer to Summer. From that daughter's house was where I first saw
snow falling, a couple of years ago.

RH> homework help yet; he probably will, eventually. A couple of weeks
RH> ago, his school had a speech contest. While we were talking one night,
RH> he recited the poem that he was going to do for the contest. Last week
RH> I asked Rachel how he did. She said that he placed 4th--but felt he
RH> should have advanced to the next round as the top 3 in his grouping
RH> were girls & he felt a boy should be represented.

Well done! My 9 and 10 year old g'kids both won awards for creative
writing. The 10 yo is now as tall as his mother, and can lift her.
That family has changed residences a dozen times, and they have just
moved from Perth to Brisbane.

GJ> No signals yet from him, so he must be working. If he was stuck in an
GJ> airport I would expect he would get some sort of connection.
RH> Undoubtedly he would. He's probably having fun somewhere and will do a
RH> write up on it when it's finished.

I'm sure it will be a Lulu when it comes!

GJ> food and other items. Angela Merkel is trapped in Lisbon, but at
RH> I understand she got home today.
GJ> I heard she managed to get to the funeral on a military helicopter.
RH> There's usually a way to work around problems, some more creative than
 RH> others.

Having power and influence helps.

GJ> Although Eurostar trains are booked out some time ahead, with standing
 GJ> room only.
RH> And who wants to stand all the time needed to make a crossing?

Although the Eurostar only takes 3 hours from Paris to London, that
would be exhausting for older folk.

GJ> As of today, some airlines are flying into the area, so I am hopeful.
RH> Sounds like you're not worrying about the flights too terribly bad

It is getting better all the time, but if we got stuck in Kuala Lumpur
I'm sure we could stand it. Flying Malaysian Airlines Adelaide to
Amsterdam, so we should get good service. It is many years since I
have flown with Malaysian, but I have good memories of the food.
