==========================
Hi Michael,

RH> time was when I was in college; we now have it on DVD. For a milk
RH> man, supposedly with little education, Tevye had quite a bit of
 RH> "smarts".

ML> One finds wisdom, or smarts, or whatever, lots of places,
ML> not just behind ivied walls. Stupidity, too.

Very true. Schools are so e-oriented these days that the person who's
computer illiterate is sunk before starting.  Assignments are given out;
if there's a question, students e-mail the instructor who, in turn,
e-mails back a clarification. Steve takes most of his tests on line and
registered for fall semester the same way. But, the stupidity factor
can pop up from time to time, as it did last semester in one of Steve's
classes. Somehow a test for a different class got in the random
selection of tests on the web area for the class. Students who got that
had no idea what it was about; eventually, the whole test was eliminated
from the grading criteria.

And, you get some students who make you wonder whot they are doing at
that school and how they managed to get admitted. OTOH, there are
students who are so brilliant that you begin to wonder your abilities.
All of the above could be applied to society as as a whole too.

-=> Ruth Haffly said to Nancy Backus <=-

RH> "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. Yes, I read it too. (G)
NB> As I recall, it was instrumental in getting some changes to conditions
NB> there... Pretty bad, but it didn't put me off meat... just made me
RH> It was responsible for getting the Food & Drug Administration going,
RH> Pure Foods Act and a bunch of other legislaion regarding purity of
RH> foods back in/around the beginning of the 20th century.

ML> Good level of erudition in this echo, I see.

I've noticed that myself. I try not to sound like a show off but enjoy
passing on little tidbits of information (like the above) that someone
may find interesting. There's so much to know about cooking, food,
eating in general that all of us could write a doctoral thesis on some
aspect of it and we wouldn't repeat each other. Boggells the mind,
doesn't it?

 ML> ...

JK> I have a hard time killing lobsters now BUT... not that much (g)
RH> I read that quickly as monsters instead of lobsters. Do you have a
RH> hard time killing the former? (G)
NB> After all, they taste so good....! (G)

ML> How do monsters taste? When I first saw a pic of a Gila monster,
ML> impression one was "how ugly," and impression two was "like
ML> chicken?" I must have been, what, six years old.

Ugly is the best way to describe them. (G) Thoughts of eating one never
crossed my mind the first time I saw a picture of one. Someone's
comment later on, on the subject of odd things (snakes, alligators, etc)
tasting like chicken probably made me aware that the Gila monster would
fit into that classification also.

RH> neighboring towns ran coupons consistantly in the local paper for 2
RH> lobsters for $9.95 when we got there. After 2 or 3 months, the price
RH> went up a dollar. Steve and I would get one of those specials and a
RH> plate of some other seafood & make our own combo. Our daughter Deborah
RH> (Michael--it was The Weathervane in Leominster.)

ML> The Weathervane has evolved into quite a chain, actually, with
ML> restaurants throughout New England. There's one in Plymouth and
ML> a whole bunch in New Hampshire and Maine. In addition, there are
ML> several unrelated but similarly named places, of which I have a
ML> particular soft spot for the Weathervane Tavern in Hamilton-Wenham,
ML> where we used to go between shows sometimes.

The one we ate at any number of times would be most special to us
probably. Steve took me to the Bull Run Tavern; I've no idea where, in
relationship to Fort Devens it was as we had only been in the area a
couple of days. He sort of knew the area from being in school there a
couple of times but I wa completly confused--and we never went back
there.

 ML> MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

ML> Title: Salmi of Fowl - GVC
ML> Categories: Main dish, Pheasant, England, Victorian, Poultry
 ML> Yield: 4 Servings

Quite a production there; I'm glad it's not the way I cook (most of the
time).

Catch you later,
