Ärende: New Authors to read [1]
====================================================================
Hi Dave,

DD> I can recommend two more for your copious spare time ... Bv)=

DD> Jeffrey Archer and Ridley Pearson.

RH> What sort of fiction do they write? I recognise the names, just not
RH> familiar with their writing. Spare time should increase in a couple of
RH> weeks; my class final is on May 20. Classes start again on August 19
RH> but we've got plans for the latter part of June into mid July-ish.

DD> Jeffrey Archer, Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare is an English
DD> author, actor, playwright and former politician. "A master at mixing
DD> power, politics, and profit into fiction."

Possible. I enjoyed Barbara Taylor Brandford's "A Woman of Substance"
series. Her description of Hart's department store, especially the food
section, half made me wonder if she based it on Harrod's.

DD> Ridley Pearson, is an American writer. He has historically written
DD> suspense and thriller novels (mostly "police procedurals") for an

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, would have to look and see. From the description,
most likely not tho.

DD> adult audience, but has also begun branching out by writing adventure
DD> books for children (with Dave Barry).

Oy Veh!

DD> I've got more. But, those should keep you busy for a bit.

RH> As in you have the books or what. Are Louis L'Amour & Tony Hillerman
RH> as good as I've heard?

DD> Louis is a good read ... mostly. He has his fans and his detractors.
DD> Sometimes his plot lines and stories are a bit suspect. But, overall,
DD> his stuff is mostly formula written and much of his "research" was
DD> spotty and not a little suspect. He was quick to file the serial
DD> numbers off a previous tale and change a few names to bring out a
DD> "new" book. Read him for entertainment, not for thought provoking
 DD> issues.

Probably pure fluff. Elmore Kelton wrote a decent western; I've got an
autographed copy of"The Wolf and the Buffalo". Met him when we were
staioned in San Angelo, TX.

DD> Tony Hillerman is an author of detective novels (mostly about a couple
DD> of Navajo cops) and non-fiction works. His stuff is pretty readable,
DD> flows right along and is well-researched, well written and insightful.
DD> His books are both entertaining and thought provoking.

And he writes about the area of AZ I'm familiar with. Might be worth
reading, just for that.

DD> Title: New York Times Cook Book Paella
DD> Categories: Seafood, Shellfish, Pork, Vegetables, Rice
 DD> Yield: 8 servings

 DD> 3 tb Tomato sauce
 DD> 2 1/4 c Rice; washed, drained

 RH> Two questions--how big a pan do I need--looks like a huge one and can I
 RH> sub brown rice?

DD> Don't see why you couldn't sub brown for polished rice. Adjust your
DD> cooking times or par-cook the brown rice, though. As to the size of
DD> the pan - paella pans tend to be wide and shallow with handles on two
DD> sides. Here's a link to a source (not the ONLY source by any means)
 DD> http://tinyurl.com/HOT-PAELLA

I probably won't be making it in any great quantity any time soon. Did
soak & cook up a good 3 or 4 pounds of garbanzo beans over yesterday
into today. Got about 21 cups, packaged into 2 cup bags (plus some into
the fridge) for the freezer. Next week I'll probably pull one or two
out and make some hummus.

DD> Title: Paella a la Valenciana
DD> Categories: Latino, Poultry, Seafood, Rice, Citrus
 DD> Yield: 6 servings

Even this makes a fair amount for only 2 people. (G)
