DD> I can recommend two more for your copious spare time ... Bv)=

DD> Jeffrey Archer and Ridley Pearson.

RH> What sort of fiction do they write? I recognise the names, just not
RH> familiar with their writing. Spare time should increase in a couple of
RH> weeks; my class final is on May 20. Classes start again on August 19
RH> but we've got plans for the latter part of June into mid July-ish.

DD> Jeffrey Archer, Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare is an English
DD> author, actor, playwright and former politician. "A master at mixing
DD> power, politics, and profit into fiction."

RH> Possible. I enjoyed Barbara Taylor Brandford's "A Woman of Substance"
RH> series. Her description of Hart's department store, especially the
RH> food section, half made me wonder if she based it on Harrod's.

DD> Ridley Pearson, is an American writer. He has historically written
DD> suspense and thriller novels (mostly "police procedurals") for an

RH> Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, would have to look and see. From the description,
 RH> most likely not tho.

DD> adult audience, but has also begun branching out by writing adventure
DD> books for children (with Dave Barry).

 RH> Oy Veh!

DD> I've got more. But, those should keep you busy for a bit.

RH> As in you have the books or what. Are Louis L'Amour & Tony Hillerman
RH> as good as I've heard?

DD> Louis is a good read ... mostly. He has his fans and his detractors.
DD> Sometimes his plot lines and stories are a bit suspect. But, overall,
DD> his stuff is mostly formula written and much of his "research" was
DD> spotty and not a little suspect. He was quick to file the serial
DD> numbers off a previous tale and change a few names to bring out a
DD> "new" book. Read him for entertainment, not for thought provoking
 DD> issues.

RH> Probably pure fluff. Elmore Kelton wrote a decent western; I've got an
RH> autographed copy of"The Wolf and the Buffalo". Met him when we were
RH> stationed in San Angelo, TX.

Not pure "fluff" but not as good, nor as original as L'Amour's ego told him
they were. Still, several of his books and stories were made into movies -
including:

Apache Territory: 75 min-based on story Last Stand at Papago Wells, 1958

Graves, 1953

Four Guns to the Border: 84 min. - Rory Calhoun, Walter Brennan,1954

Guns of the Timberland: 91 min. - also released as Stampede, Alan Ladd, 1960

I had not realised that there were that many (and several quite entertaining -
especially Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot in an American western horse
opera). In 1969, he won his only Golden Spur Award from the Western Writers of
America for "Down the Long Hills".

Kelton, OTOH, wrote more than 40 books, including "The Time it Never Rained,"
"The Wolf and the Buffalo," "The Day the Cowboys Quit," and "The Good Old
Boys," which became a Turner Network movie directed by and starring Tommy Lee
Jones. Kelton was named the number-one Western writer of all time by the
Western Writers of America. The WWA voted him seven Spur awards for best
Western novel of the year and the career Saddleman Award, and he received four
Western Heritage Wrangler awards from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. He died
in August 2009 at age 82 in San Angelo, TX.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Elmer's Mustard Fried Venison
 Categories: Five, Game, Condiments
      Yield: 5 servings

4 (to 6) venison loin steaks
           - or venison chops
           Seasoning salt & pepper
      2 tb Dijon-style mustard
      1 ts Horseradish
  1 1/3 c Olive oil

Season steaks with your own blend of salt & pepper.

  Combine mustard and horseradish.

Spread mixture on each side of steaks so that the steaks
are fully covered on both sides.

Fry in hot olive oil, being careful to avoid being
  splattered.

Poke with fork and as soon as juices run clear, steaks are
done and ready to be served with whatever garnish you
  prefer.

A baked potato and a green dinner salad rounds out a
  delicious meal.

  Serves 4 -6
