Hello Joan,

GJ> These days in Adelaide most hotels provide excellent quality meals at
GJ> reasonable prices to encourage customers to stay and spend money on
GJ> the poker machines. It is customary to order and pre-pay for meals and
GJ> drinks at the bar, then to wait for them to be served at the table
GJ> when ready. As this pre-pay arrangement makes it easy and natural not
GJ> to tip, the wait staff have to make do with the standard $13 or so per
 GJ> hour wages.

JM> Here it would be good to clarify the meaning of "hotels"
 JM> in Oz-speak. As I understand, a "hotel" is often just a
JM> pub of some sort, though there might be a requirement that
JM> a few rooms be available for hire? Chuckle! There might
JM> be some sense in requiring American bars to include a
JM> few rooms for hire overnight for patrons too drunk to
 JM> drive home safely!

I think that every place known as a "hotel" is also an "inn", and
legally required to provide accommodation and meals to travellers.
An establishment which only provides alcoholic drinks is a "tavern".
Here the term, "pub" (public house) covers both the above.
A "bar" provides drinks of any kind - milk-, coffee-, juice-, booze.

Many years ago I was with friends, driving around a pleasant country
area of South Australia, and we stopped for drinks at a small hotel.
It was so pleasant that we decided to spend the night there. This was
a place which normally only served drink to passers-by and locals, but
because it was required to have rooms, they had them, and so opened up
both of them for us. We needed dinner, of course, so that weekend's
roast cooked for the proprietor's family had to be shared with us. The
pigeons which were nesting on the windowsills of the guest rooms were
highly insulted to be disturbed by the occupants.

I particularly remember the tasty breakfast eggs, from chooks which
were fed the slops from the bar, and the local farm bacon.
