Ärende: house carving
=====================
Hi Janis,

JK> Maybe I'll give them a call today.. it's been a little crazy here :)

Just a little? Seems like that's the norm around here. Tonight about
5:30 I realised I needed to pull something together for supper. I
grabbed a can of diced tomatoes, one of tomato sauce, some pasta, a bit
of and the last bit of whole wheat panko crumbs from the pantry. From
the fridge I got out a couple of eggs, flour, the usual Italian herbs, a
bit each of green bell pepper and onion, provelone and parmisan cheeses
& the small eggplant we got last week at the farm stand. Other stuff
included garlic powder, salt & pepper, canola and olive oils. I pulled
together a quick eggplant parmisan with tubular shaped pasta on the
side. From start to eating was about 75 minutes and there's enough
eggplant left over for another meal. A few of the slices got a bit over
done in the browning (one coil heats a bit hotter than the others) but
not enough to affect the taste. I don't want to do that every night but
it tasted good tonight. Steve cleaned up the cast iron fry pan I used
to brown the eggplant in; the dishwasher got most of the other dishes
and hand wash ones were minimal.

JK> > Or, if they discontinue it in the south, they also do in the north.
JK> > Can't ever tell with these big box folks.

JK> True.. last time we were there they had them though.. Should be
JK> getting the car back today or tomorrow :) We better, at least (g).

They didn't give you a loaner?

>> Yes, I know.. I considered it.. but we decided just in case we are in
>> a position where we have to sell, having the 2nd apt. downstairs could
>> make the difference.

JK> > Yes, somebody could really carve up that big old house. Trouble is,
JK> it > would only be pretty on the outside then.

JK> It was carved up a _lot_ when we bought it.. you could see how easy it
JK> would be to return it to a one-family home though. We took out the
JK> wall to the other kitchen on the first floor to make that all one
JK> living space - it was really just a piece of wallboard behind the door

Somebody had a limited budget and imagination when the place was made
into apartments. (G)

JK> that was closed and locked; on the second floor, we opened up the two
JK> apartments into one large one for my daughter and her family as well.
JK> I think they lived upstairs happily for about 5 years.. then they
JK> moved to Ithaca, NY. So... if we wanted to we could become
JK> mega-landlords with 3 apartments in this house (g).. NO thanks (g) We
JK> thought about selling this huge house and buying a smaller one in
JK> Ithaca, but we're not sure about moving there because it _is_ colder
JK> there and they get quite a bit more snow than we do here, just an hour
 JK> away.

Advantage--close to grandsons and less area to clean. Disadvantages--no
room for a garden, colder weather, more snow, etc, etc. Still, having
the big house gives you lots of options. Being a live in landlord is no
fun; ask clean Dave about it. Room to spread all your projects, for
cats, dogs and grandkids to roam and run--priceless.

>> Yes, me too.. very surprising. Then again, are you sure glazed tiles
>> wouldn't work just as well? Those italian ceramic tiles I used in my
>> oven (still have several of them on a table I glued them to (g))

JK> > I'm not sure. I just recall reading about unglazed tile. I think
JK> it > was years ago, on the echo here.

JK> Ok, understand. Those Italian ceramic tiles were finished somewhat,
JK> but not colored so I always thought they would be considered 'glazed'.
JK> I could be wrong though (grin).

Any paint is glaze, if it's clear or colored.
