================================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> As one of my misunderstood and misjudged, Public Servant, presumed
GJ> ancestors once said (in Latin), "What is truth?".
ML> That's not so easy to determine, but "what is falsehood" is much
ML> easier. Referring to "your Grolier," to a person who has never
ML> owned or cited or respected Grolier, is falsehood.

"Your" by association, as in "your country", or "your government".
(Glen with fingers in ears, running away rapidly, ducking and weaving!)

 ML> 3. Proto-Sino-Tibetan isn't antique Chinese any more than

GJ> "Proto-" = First, or original. Someone would have spoken it, long
GJ> ago, in antiquity - or such was my interpretation of the meaning of the

ML> That's actually not the case. The proto languages, such as IE,
ML> FU, and PST are back-formed several removes from known early
ML> languages. The likelihood that they or anything closely
ML> resembling them were actually used is slim and none, unless
ML> the 19th-century scholars who made them up were channelling
ML> the spirits of Ug the great toolmaker.

Having displayed my ignorance of the terminology used by etymologists,
I still find the connection between human pre-history migrations and
the migration of words and foods fascinating. It is interesting to
speculate how it happens that there are more varieties of sweet
potatoes in the native markets in the remote highlands of PNG than in
the supermarkets of America, and evidence has been found that these
were being cultivated in PNG over 1000 years ago. How did it happen?

GJ> I'm sure Burt would be happy to show you. He is a very helpful chap.
ML> But he appears to have forgetted, worse luck.

ML> I might have misremembered (as Dirty Dave says) - the only case

Surely not! That is the prerogative of the elderly, like Burt and me.

ML> where I find Burt did this was not on the echo but on one of the
ML> food lists. Clean Dave (or possibly Dirty Dave) told Burt YNAIYJAOF,
ML> because Burt doesn't like acronyms, and everyone started sending
ML> Burt things with lots of acronyms, to which he responded with
ML> messages quoting the acronymed messages with the line "returned
 ML> to sender unopened" appended.

Quite possible.

GJ> Did you see where one of Branson's 747s recently flew internationally
GJ> with one engine running exclusively on biodiesel derived from cooking
ML> So Virgin Atlantic will be fueling its planes from the frahkell?
ML> Will you in future be able to sit in the "McDonalds Fragrance"
ML> section vs. the "Upper Class" section?

When I was doing research on the use of coconut oil in vehicles, that
certainly produced a far more pleasant exhaust smell than diesel.

GJ> It is good to see major industrialists motivated towards wider use of
GJ> renewable fuels. There may yet be hope for the future.

ML> Boys and girls, can you say "SUN"? I thought you could.

'Zackly! Some plants are quite efficient at turning sun energy into
liquid fuels. Some farmers here power their tractors on a small
proportion of the canola oil that they grow.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Sweet Potato Fries
 Categories: Newsgroups, May.rec
      Yield: 4 Servings

     32 oz Canola oil
      2 md Sweet potatoes
           Paper towels
      1 ts Cinnamon sugar

Place oil in large saucepan. Preheat on high 10-12 minutes, or until
oil reaches 350 F. Wash potatoes and cut ends off. Using vegetable
peeler, peel potatoes. Slice potatoes in half then into 1/4-inch
strips lengthwise. Using tongs, place one potato strip into oil. If
oil bubbles up and potato begins to immediately cook, then oil is hot
enough. Using tongs, carefully place remaining potatoes in oil. Fry
8-10 minutes, or until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Place
paper towels in medium mixing bowl. Using slotted spoon, remove
potatoes and place in bowl with paper towels. Sprinkle with cinnamon
sugar and toss to coat. Serve.
