Ärende: Growing kids
====================
Hi Janis,

JK> siblings. Their > parents are closer to my parents in age. OTOH,
JK> Rachel is the 2nd of 7 > oldest, Deborah 3rd oldest cousin in the line
 JK> up from Steve's family. On > my side, they're #s 1 & 2; the next one
JK> down is 4 years younger than
JK> > Deborah. Our 2 are my parents only grand daughters too.

JK> My Mom now has 9 grandchildren including our two.. don't think I'll
JK> ever see that many grandchildren (G). But my daughter's 3 son's are
 JK> great.

You have it nice--they're not too far away to pop in often, far enough
that they don't take advantage of it.

Not sure if my son will have any, he's expressed not being
 JK> fond of the idea.

He may change his mind in years to come; don't give up on him yet.

>> I recently deleted my facebook account.. that was just before they
>> made the recent changes to all the 'privacy' stuff.. I didn't like
>> where they were going then, and personally I think it's worse now than
>> ever.. given the reports I've read. That's just me (g).

JK> > I'm not on it--too busy to spend more time on the computer than I do
JK> > now. (G) Steve is on, on a limited basis tho. It's one way to keep
JK> up > with our girls and friends from previous assignments.

JK> Makes sense. Most people who know me, know how to contact me so it's
JK> not a big deal. I use other services like ICQ, aim, yahoo and gmail.

Same here; we've had the earthlink accounts since about 04 while we were
in HI. Or, they can get hold of me thru Steve's FB. Friends of our
girls have befriended us; some of them were "adpoted" kids for us & our
girls were for their parents. (G)

JK> > I know, even tho my mom was never a great cook, her cooking has gone
JK> > down hill more so in the past few years. I think Dad had taken over
JK> a > fair amount of the meal prep before he broke his hip. I saw,
 JK> taped to

JK> Those type injuries are always rough on elder folk, but not just those
JK> of the age of our parents. One of the reasons my doc insisted that I
JK> go for therapy and start taking this drug is because he knows that if
JK> I had such a bad fall as to break my hip, things can then sometimes
JK> just get progressively worse, in many respects..

Very true. Are you using anything like Fosamax or Boniva? We did see
some research tho, that long term Fosamax may be a contributer towards
DCIS. We were wondering what caused it for me & saw that as a potential
smoking gun.

JK> > the inside of one cupboard door, the measurements needed to make the
JK> > various cooked cereals they eat during the winter. I don't recall
JK> them > there last year; he must have put them up origninally when he
JK> started > making it. Now they're a help for my mom to remember how
JK> much cereal > and water to use. Two simple ingredients (plus salt),
 JK> for something
JK> > she's made so much in the past but now needs help remembering how
JK> much > to use, how to cook it.

JK> That can be rough for people her age.. mom has the same kinds of
JK> problems I noticed when she was here.

Scary to think about tho. One time she sort of asked out loud if she
remembered to salt the water (They really could consume much less salt
than they do, same with sugar.) for potatoes. If I hadn't seen her do
it, they would have been double salted. Made me wonder how many times
that has happened.

>> picnic as well... remember the girl with red hair who we caught on
>> film eating durian? That was her :) She's a great person and
>> considered part of our family pretty much :)

JK> > I remember her--she did not care for the durian, did she? (G)

JK> Nope, she did not.. her face was absolutely great in that pic.. I
JK> think Dale captured it IIRC. I still look at those pictures of that
JK> picnic and break up when I see her reaction :)

It's one of those that you'll crack up every time you see it from now
until forever. (G)

>> She'll enjoy that :) My son really and truly takes after my Uncle
>> Ralph.. Mom tells me he used to hold chicken up to the light to see if

JK> > But there's hidden fat too. We weren't allowed to be picky--too many
JK> > mouths to feed on too little pay meant take it and don't complain.

JK> This was way back, during the depression. I'm sure they weren't
JK> allowed to do much more than complain about it (g).

Most likely. OTOH, even in the Deperssion, some moms went to great
lengths to fix foods they knew their kids would eat. Those were the
exceptions, generally better off in terms of finances, type people tho.

>> up to be an astrophysicist at Nasa so being picky didn't hurt him any
>> (bg). He's retired now, but they just contacted him again to work on
>> their Mars project. That must be so exciting.

JK> > It does sound interesting. As long as he's willing to work--it'll
JK> help > him keep his mind sharp too.

JK> I am sure it will, and why he's always agreed to work for them when
JK> they've called him, since he 'retired'.

Extra money, something to keep hismind challenged & out of his wife's
hair...........(G)

JK> When my daughter was born, the pediatrician said, you'll have to watch
JK> what this one eats .. even though I was only nursing her, her weight
JK> gain was beyond the expected amount. Exact opposite with my son when
 JK> he was younger :)

Ours grew fast too. The pediatrician I took Rachel to, didn't like it,
turned out he had a kid with "formula fatties." OTOH, I took Deborah to
an older GP who was very encouraging & accepted the weight gain for what
it was.

JK> Hmm.. there are parts of NY that are empty of anything for hours.. not
JK> quite as bad as what I remember in parts fo Indiana or Tennessee
 JK> though :)

Neither of them are as desolate as some parts of the west, believe me.

>> Even Guilden's brown mustard is great.

JK> > We've been buying a lot of Plochmann's stone ground with horseradish
 JK> > lately. Good stuff!

JK> Yes, that is good. Anything with horseradish is great I think :)

>> Yes, they do.. the beet leaves at this point are starting to take off
>> so the little ones enjoy you removing a bundle (grin).
