Have not seen Muir Glen, but from the two
responses I got, both being almost identical, I'd
guess that it's a pretty much industry wide practice.
That being said, it's a good "next" question as to why
there are such widely varying prices for different tomato
products that are (other than seasoning and cut) pretty
much identically proccessed? As Unka Dirty Dave says
"follow the money"!

I bought a ton of "Forever Stamps" when they first came out.
40cents I think? Finally almost to the end of them and then I'll
buy a whole lot more. Makes sense, the price goes up and I'm
still paying the "old" price.
