I assume that you're talking about "free to air" or "in the clear"
(non-encrypted) satellite feeds. C band (big dish) may not be your answer. Ku
or Ka equipment is much smaller and less $$$ for the antenna, positioner(s),
etc. And much of the former C-band programming has gone digital and moved to
the K-bands.

OTOH, C-Band antennae, positioners, etc. can often be had for the asking (and
removal). Cruising through the country side one often sees big ol' (2 metres or
bigger) antennae in obvious disuse. Stopping and asking might get you a
freebie. You are on your own for installation - I don't do house calls.

C-band satellite cable was running about a dollar per foot - back in Y2K. And
not easy to find, even then. You'll also need a three metre length of
3.5"/8.8cm outside diameter schedule 40 pipe. Free ain't totally free. Bv)=

Here's a web site that may help you research your project ...

You may not have been on the echo when I was running the satellite shop - but,
I know a thing or two about TVRO and antenna reception. Go with the Winegard
HD8800 twin bay UHF antenna. There is no better, no matter what stories you may
have heard. We used the 8800 in commercial (motel, etc) applications where the
business owner was setting up his own head-end to distribute TV signals to
multiple locations. The reception was outstanding, stable and the unit was very
tolerant of approximate positioning. Which is a good thing when needing a
signal feed that cannot use a movable positioner.

Forget all the bally-hoo about antennae being "HD-ready" or "Made for Digital
TV", etc. An antenna is an antenna is an antenna. It picks up signals no matter
if the information encoded on those signals is analog, digital or pagigiwicz
encoded. Bv)=

And remember, above all things, that UHF (where all channel reside) is STRICTLY
a line-of-sight signal. If your antenna cannot "see" the transmitter antenna
you won't get a signal. The higher you position your receiving antenna the
better your range will be ... within signal strength limits.
