Well, yeah. As far north as you are located one must get a good distance in the
air to clear nearby buildings, trees (if any) mountains (if any) and "see" the
geostationary, equatorial satellite belt without trying to shoot through the
earth. A 30' mast is shorter than I would have guessed for your area. 

I'm guessing that you were dealing with 6" schedule 80 or 120 pipe - at least
for the bottom of the mast. Regular 3 1/2" schedule 40 pipe in that length
would be pretty "whippy". And you need have a stable platform when you are
looking at a tiny speck in the sky 35,786 km (22,236 mi) high above the
quator.

Not so, White Fang. "General Instrument discontinued production of VC II+ RS
modules in 1998 in favor of its DigiCipher system. Over the next ten years,
broadcasters migrated to digital transmission delivery and discontinued their
analog feeds. In October 2008, it was announced by Motorola that their
authorization center would no longer authorize any new decoders after December
31, 2008, and that the current remaining analog Videocipher channels would
switch entirely to digital transmission after that same date."

DigiCipher descramblers are still in production and practically unhackable ...
but, can be authorised by nearly any programmer. I know little of the hoops one
would have to jump through in order to get a receiver "authorised" out on the
frozen tundra.

Any analog signals still on the satellites are currently "in the clear" ...
like the FTA stuff.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Little Joe's Scramble
 Categories: Eggs, Beef, Greens, Cheese
      Yield: 6 servings
 
      3 tb Peanut oil
      1 lg Chopped onion
      1 lb Ground beef
      1 lb Blanched, drained, chopped
           - spinach
           Salt & Tabasco
      4 lg Eggs; lightly beaten
      4 tb Grated Parmesan cheese
 
  Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the onion, and
  saute over medium heat until soft. Add the beef, using
  a fork to break it up into small bits. Cook until the
  redness is gone. Add the spinach, and mix well. Cook,
  stirring, for 3-4 minutes. Add salt to taste. Mix the
  Tabasco with the eggs. Pour over the beef mixture, and
  cook, stirring until the eggs are set. Remove from
  heat, transfer to a warm platter and sprinkle with
  Parmesan.
