I was always unclear on the priority of customs, immigration,
and entering a country.

Not so, I think. It's an artful marriage of two purposes, but
the other one came first.

More or less my view. It's like, well, though you get diarrhea
and sunburn and stuff from antibiotics, you're likely to get
sicker without them. I have the opportunity to choose my poison,
though, and the airline and cruise companies mostly don't.

I will point out that cruise companies instituted the search
policies well before the fear of international terrorism,
protecting revenue under the guise of providing security.

And sinking one or the other would have similar effects,
mostly none except the loss of the onboard lives. Of course
in either case blowing one up at port might be far more
destructive but would require a conspiracy among a bunch of
passengers and/or crew, even in the absence of heightened
security measures at level orange. Airplanes are a more
efficient way of causing trouble.

Probably not, but you're focusing on the loss of a big boat,
whereas terrorism is more than that. Knocking out the Port of
Seattle for a few days would cause more trouble both short-
and long-term then the total obliteration of Argenta or Placenta
or wherever the Newfoundland Ferry goes.

Here's an act of terrorism:

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.02

      Title: Wine Zucchini
 Categories: Salads, Vegetables, Kooknet
      Yield: 6 servings

  1 1/2 lb Zucchini
    1/2 c  Dry White Wine
    1/2 c  Vegetable or Olive Oil
      1 ts Salt
    1/4 ts Ground Pepper
    1/4 ts Dried Tarragon
    1/2 c  Parsley, chopped

  Cut zucchini lengthwise into 3/4" long strips. Cut across in 1/2"
  pieces to make about 5-6 cups. Set aside while you bring wine, oil,
  salt, pepper and tarragon to a boil. Add zucchini, bring to a boil
  again. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes until
  just barely tender. Pour into a serving dish, cover and chill several
  hours or overnight.

  Garnish with parsley before serving. Goes nicely with grilled fish,
  chicken or ribs.
