Ärende: Re: PELLET STOVE 80315
===============================
GJ> So when are you going to install a wood-burning stove?

DSac> For cooking, in the kitchen? I'd say "never," . . .

DSh> I can remember by Grandmother's house in Richland Georgia.
DSh> The kitchen was about 20x20 feet and had a wood stove just
DSh> slightly off center. It was not only what she cooked on,
DSh> but heated that end of the house. Her house was built in
DSh> the 19th century -- wood frame.

From what I can gather from photos etc. of our house, the original
cooking appliance in the kitchen was a combination coal/wood/kerosene
stove (it would burn whatever they had at the time.) The chimney
was put up with a full ground-to-crown ceramic thimble, which was
unusual at the time, but generally considered necessary to make
the chimney easier to clean if one was burning wood. There is a
duct that snakes up the wall and out over the stove that once
delivered hot air from the furnace in the cellar and which is now
unused (we converted to radiator heat) Before the duct was there,
there was a simple register opening to allow hot air up to the
second floor from the kitchen.

A wood-burning stove for cooking on, though, is not something
I would even consider. I'd go to electric first if gas became
simply unaffordable for even the low-volume use of cooking.
Glen enjoys pretending that Australia and New Zealand are some
sort of Third-World eco-friendly paradise and pulling my leg
with it, but I just laugh that off because I know he's full of
crap and slightly mad. [g]

DSh> Personally, I think that the pellet stove you now have is a
DSh> much more sensible idea than a stove that burns regular wood.
DSh> Our wood stove in the basement has sat unused for more than
DSh> five years, and we nolonger even have a wood pile we could
DSh> feed it from. It was a bit of an effort to get it started
DSh> up each day, and it would not burn through the night on a
DSh> load of wood. In addition, you are using what might
DSh> have otherwise been waste products of the lumber industry.

All good points. We did a lot of research before we bought the
stove we did; we chose a pellet stove over a woodburner for the
reasons you mentioned, and also because pellet stove emissions
are far lower than raw wood and there is much less ash and a
better BTU efficiency.

Also, woodpiles in my moist neighborhood tend to attract termites,
and any woodpile at all will have bugs and critters in it. Bring
the wood in, and the critters wake up in the warmth and scuttle off
to find a new hiding place. And there's dirt and stuff clinging
to the wood, and bark chips, and so on and so on...

I don't actually regret having put in the propane central heating
system. If the street ever does get a natural gas line, I have
the proper conversion kit to switch it over to natural gas, which
is far less expensive than propane. And if prices never fall to
affordable levels again, I can have the boiler removed and replaced
with one that burns pellets as well! And from then on use pellets
for main heat, backup heat, and hot water too. (That is purely
speculative for now.)
