Ärende: Fishin'
===============
 Hi, Ruth,

 JM> I miss fishing! That's where I usually did pan-fried
JM> whole fish. My family fished when I was a kid, and I

RH> You learned quickly tho, probably enough years of watching your dad
 RH> helped. (G)

JM> Yes, I'd seen the process often enough, just
JM> didn't have to do it. Heck, Dad would even
JM> take my fish off the hook so I didn't have
JM> to grab the slimy, squirming thing myself.
JM> I learned to do that for myself even earlier.

RH> My dad's idea of outdoor recreation was to work in his garden

JM> that was another of Dad's chores, to
 JM> clean fresh-caught fish

RH> Yes, it's usually a "you catch, you clean" rule
 JM> in most households.

JM> Ha! Dad didn't even get off on that one, as he
JM> was not likely to have caught many fish. He wasn't
JM> "into" fishing as much as Mom and I were, so would
JM> wander off into the woods, sometimes with my brothers,
JM> while Mom and I enjoyed our fishing. I remember

RH> At least your family was spending time together
 RH> in the great outdoors.

Yeah, my folks were good that way. They took the time
to do a lot of stuff with us kids, all as a family. We
took those fishing trips (usually midmorning, picnic
lunch, and all afternoon until the evening skeeters
started swarming.) Mom also would pack up a picnic
lunch and have us all go up to a big state park on a
nearby mountain to enjoy the outdoor picnic, and we
might also hike around a bit, or we kids might play
on the playground. No fancy picnic stuff, just cold
sandwiches like egg salad or tuna salad, potato chips,
maybe a can of pork'n'beans or her very good potato
salad, and a can of (usually store brand) soda pop
 each. But excellent to me!

RH> Possibly on private property where no license was needed? That's the
 RH> only time I've shot a firearm--up where Steve's folks lived until
 RH> about 14 years ago.

Maybe then people didn't need a license to possess
a firearm, but I thought that had always been
required. I think I have only shot once, too, again
target shooting in my Gramma's back yard (in town!)
while my youngest Uncle had been asked to look after
us kids while Mom and Gramma shopped. He'd just
gotten out of the Army and had me and my 2Y younger
brother target shooting with his pistol. Boy, did he
get screamed at when the ladies got back and saw this.
Probably lucky we didn't hurt anyone.

JM> Now my memory is jogged in the direction of fish,
JM> so I bought some frozen filets for this, which
JM> I thankfully have room to keep frozen. But then I
JM> found a great price on a pork roast, and a pretty
JM> good deal on corned beef, so the fish must wait a
 JM> while.

RH> Sound like you're going to be eating good. We looked
RH> at corned beef a few weeks ago but decided against
 RH> it.

Look too much like ham? I bought way too much that
day (sometimes all the "bargains" come at once), and
didn't have freezer space for much, so had to roast
up the pork roast almost immediately, and have been
making leftover recipes and sandwiches of that while
trying to finish off remnants of a big chicken, and
use up the rest of a packet of ground beef I'd also
gotten for a specific recipe. Since corned beef
keeps pretty well refrigerated (the purpose of
corning), it had to wait until after St. Pat's
Day...and it's still waiting. I have to stop doing
stuff like that! Yesterday's weekly grocery trip
was only to the Farmers Market, where I spent all
of $3.60! Small bag of small onions ($1), a head
 of garlic (35c), 5 med-small tomatoes ($1.25) and a
big bunch of early spinach ($1). No more meat comes
in until I use up more of my hoard!

 Joan
