Hi Jim 4/1/08 2:33 PM

jw-> I wasn't familiar with the Petit Verdot grape so I
jw-> googled a bit...

Geeee, I sure wish I could taste 8 or 9 flavors while sipping one wine!
My hats off to this Wine Rookie!
[disbelieving look apparent on my face]

I did note his quote is from www.cellartracker.com

LONG DESCRIPTION OF MY CELLAR TRACKER DATABASE, AND USAGE:

I keep my cellar records on that site. It costs me a $10-$15
donation a year. I enter a few words from the label, and
instantly create a full database record. I can enter purchase
date, price and number of bottles; edit with a few clicks when I
drink a bottle; add personal taste notes, professional notes, and
add in notes from other amateurs, like "winerookie" above.

I can print out great Cellar Reports by my Bin; or a Report
by Color, Type, Country, and Winery, with quantity purchase price,
and Bin number.

I use the latter Report to find the bottle I want quickly, [no more
rearranging the whole cellar to keep types together] deciding the
specific wine to bring upstairs, and to pencil off consumed bottles.
I update the database every few weeks or when I purchase new wine.

I use the Bin report to easily check that the number of bottles in
a bin corresponds with the database.

I can also look up or print records of consumed bottles. That
data is dropped from current records but kept in archive. I don't
use this much, as I seldom enter tasting notes. I sometimes check
to see if I have had a particular wine before.

It takes me me just a few minutes to enter a bottle purchase or a
case purchase; the system instantly creates a record with all kinds
of location info, community price ranges, drink by time suggestions,
etc., etc. All this with minimal data entry. Once you pull up the
specific wine, using label info, all those kinds of data are
automatically added to my base record.

It is a joy to have the data. I can quickly pick out an inexpensive
wine, or a special wine, and notice wines I should drink soon. I
can easily tell what kind of wine I'm running low on. Well worth
the minor time invested. And to boot, I enjoy the data entry as I
learn while I'm doing it.

My "Bins." by the way. are just 26 cardboard wine cases laid on their
sides, with a big red Bin number on the one flap I leave on the case.
I only change them when I get a case with sturdier cardboard
dividers.

[chuckle] I do not have 312 bottles of wine. The quantity runs
around 180 bottles. Mostly very inexpensive wines. [chuckle] I
could tell Michael was easily underwhelmed by my cellar at the
Newark FlyFest.

Disclaimer: I'm just a user, and have no connection with Cellar
Tracker.

Burt
