Hello Bur,

gj-> In Coober Pedy there is a surfeit of sunlight, so everyone
gj-> tries to escape it - into cool, dark bars mainly, where
gj-> rough miners hatch plots to blow up the local police station.
gj-> That is done about every 3 or 4 years.

BF> Are they a good example of the speed of intellectual actions of the
 BF> average Aussie?

 BF> Just curious.

The residents of Coober Pedy are different. The landscape is almost
tree-less, with nothing to break the flat monotony but thousands of
piles of mullock which has been dug out of the ground in the search for
opals. As the town's only reason for existance is opal mining, these
people are used to handling explosives, and probably use more, and are
better skilled in its use than al Qeida. There is an undercurrent of
crime, and people disappear from time to time; some of their bodies are
found down abandoned mine shafts. The police station is one of the
above-ground buildings, and is therefore the target for any disgruntled
miners who want to let off steam. As it is unoccupied at night, it is
considered as "fair game". Being only made of corrugated iron, it
disintegrates satisfactorily with only a stick or two of gelignite.

I stayed there overnight in a motel on my last drive to Darwin. The
food was terrible, but the beer was cold. There is a supermarket of
sorts. It is the only one I have seen where dogs came in with their
owners. Locals and bush aborigines were the main customers; passing
tourists were rare.

MMMMM----------------------WITCHETTY GRUBS---------------------------

These famous bush tucker items were always a special treat for the
Aboriginals, and a particular turn-off for the European population.

As more and more people have tried witchetty grubs so their shock
value has lessened. It's much the same as Aussies eating sushi,
sashimi, or some, even raw oysters. The taste of all these foods is
excellent, and so are witchetty grubs. Witchetty grubs taste very
much like almond chicken; they are easy to cook and delicious to eat.
The grubs are the larvae of a large moth, and are found in most parts
  of the country.

The more common plants invaded by the grub are wattle, weeping
willow, red gum, candle nuts, milky pine, and some eucalyptus. They
live on the wood of tree trunks and the roots of trees. Their
presence is usually indicated by a heap of sawdust at the base of the
tree trunk, or by the sickly appearance of a small tree.

To catch them, insert the hook end of a piece of wire into a hole and
drag the grub out. A sickly or broken wattle can also be up rooted
and checked for grubs. If you find one, it's not uncommon to find a
  dozen or more close by.

It's best to remove the head and gut of grubs before you eat them as
these parts are laden with wood pulp and taste extremely bitter.

The grubs can be eaten raw, but are best cooked in hot ashes or just
  fried in butter.
