I stand it up in flower vases with water and cover it with a plastic
grocery bag like a little greenhouse tent. I do that with anything
with stems. Things like lettuce go into a bowl with 1/2 inch
standing water and get covered too. One does have to remember to
change the water at least twice a week.

Come late May and morel season, yes. In the meantime white button
mushrooms are generally $1.79 in the stores. Two weeks ago one of
three large Edmonton area mushroom farms burned to the ground and
will be out of action for half a year or so. I was pleased to see
that mushrooms were only up a dime at $1.89 this morning. Apparently
there is surplus production throughout Canada so for a small
shipping surcharge we will not have to go without here. I bought a
case of canned mushrooms last week just in case.

I do. Often.

Today I saw good looking fresh hydroponic Canadian Campari tomatoes
at $3.69. I didn't get any. Dale, was that the brand you
recommended? If so I just might buy a small package despite the
price.

I remember ordering it at my mom's favourite Szechwan restaurant in
small town Renfrew, Ontario. It had lots of carrot slivers in it, no
chilies and was ever so faintly hot. I mentioned the lack of heat to
the waiter as I asked for chile paste and he said, "We don't make it
for you, we make it for your mom. She's a regular here." That was
all there was to that! [g]


MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Szechwan Chicken Chow Fun
 Categories: Chinese, Chicken, Noodles
      Yield: 1 servings
 
      4 oz Ground chicken; (cooked)
     14 oz Chow fun noodles; (wide
           rice noodle)
      2 TB minced scallions
      1 ts Minced garlic
      1 ts Chili Paste
      1 ts Szechwan preserved vegetable
      2 TB shredded black fungus
           mushrooms
      2 TB soy sauce
      2 TB vinegar
      2 TB sugar
      1 ts Oyster sauce
      1 ts Mushroom soy sauce
      2 TB water

  Separate the chow fun noodles and cover with plastic wrap until
  ready for service.
  
  Heat wok and add 2 tsp.  Vegetable oil.  Stir fry garlic and chill
  paste for 5 to 7 seconds. Add ground chicken sear with garlic and
  chill paste. Add black fungus mushrooms and sauce stir-fry
  briefly.
  
  Separate the noodles and drop into the wok while you are mixing a
  handful at a time. Continue cooking until the noodles have
  absorbed all the flavors and are hot.
  
  Finish with sesame oil. Serve into bowls or plates. Garnish with
  Szechwan preserved vegetables and minced scallions.
