GJ> If the pointers were thusly re-set, you would miss all the
GJ> non-personal mail as well. Then you would probably notice previously
GJ> unread subjects being referred to.

ML> Well, yes. Periodically that happens; I sometimes attribute it
ML> to my having read without paying sufficient attention or to the
ML> nefarious custom of adding text after a recipe (something I
ML> gleefully do on occasion). There have been occasions where I have

That is naughty, as it can completely change the relevance of the
recipe to the preceding verbage!

ML> in fact noticed my pointers reset, though - more likely due to a
ML> bbs-level glitch, I admit, than any malicious behavior.

I really do not think anyone would ever bother to hack into your
identity on a bbs just to read your messages, as the Cooking Echo is
quite open, and everything is available to be read by anyone. In spite
of my subtle insinuations about ASIO and CIA delaying my own subversive
contributions to food fights, in my saner moments I realise (I hope)
that those insecure spy hunter organisations would not find me of
interest to them or any associates.

GJ> Another solution would be to be more controversal in your writings.
GJ> You have been writing some excellent reports, which have been duly
GJ> appreciated, but normally there is nothing in them to arouse the
ML> Oh, let me figure out a subject to be controversial about in
ML> my writings. H'm. Nothing that the echo is ready for yet.

The subjects that Dylan Thomas found of most interest in pubs -
"Birth, death, sex, politics and religion", unfortunately have limited
application in this Echo. In any case, I am sure you are already
bombarded with a surfeit of politics!

I have read that, largely as result of the banning of glass
projectiles - er - bottles at UK sporting events, Sainsbury's is
trialing the packaging of Australian and New Zealand wine in PET
bottles. This will allow the wine to be brought in tankers and bottled
in UK, thus reducing carbon emissions during transportation. It is
anticipated that the wine's shelf life will be reduced to only 10 to 12
months, due to the permeability of the plastic.

It so happens that I have some empty plastic, 187ml Hardy's bottles
which had contained a 2006 Chardonnay. These bottles incorporate a
plastic drinking "glass" which doubles as a screwtop. These originated
from Reynella, in South Australia, so it is apparent that SA once more
leads the world in wine packaging.... [Did I write that, or is someone
playing tricks with my brain? Kevin, stop it!]

Title: CHEAPER WINE - HOW SWEET IT IS
 Categories: Info, Adelaide, Alcohol
      Yield: 1 servings

           ;

Wine drinkers are finally seeing the much-talked about benefits from
  the national oversupply of grapes.

While grapegrowers are doing it tough, many selling at well below
production costs, consumers are picking up bargains across most
  varieties.

Among examples of wines discounted is Katnook cabernet sauvignon
which last year sold for about $39 & now is priced at $29.90, said
Adam Jenkins, senior business manager at Dan Murphy's. "The Rosemount
range regularly sold for about $12.99 & are now regularly seen for
  under $10."

Mr Jenkins said the consumers were the winners. "They've never really
bought products as well as they can currently."

At BWS, mechandise manager Scott Tremble said there were now "some
very drinkable wines" for under $10. "Two years ago, that would have
been unheard of." Hardy's RR was one label that used to sell for
  around $7 & was now under $5.

Melbourne St Cellars manager Ben Pike said red wine were the best
value for money. "The price of Peter Lehmann shiraz has fluctuated
over the last few years, but now was well priced at around $16 a
  bottle.

Booze Bothers director Adrian Saturno said retailers were being
offered great deals. "There's an abundance of wine. Most prices are
either lower or the same. They haven't gone up in 12 months."

He said Houghton white burgundy & semillon sauvignon blanc had
dropped by $1 from last year to $7.99.

Riverland Winegrape Growers Association executive director Chris
Byrne said the situation for growers throughout the state, however,
was looking "very grim". "There hasn't been a single vine pulled but,
for most growers, the cost of growing grapes is $350/tonne & many
growers are offered as low as $80/tonne." "There's already a very
high level of financial stress across the Riverland & we're now
witnessing a high level of emotional stress."

Mt Byrne said the grape glut could take about five years to clear,
warning that some growers would go out of business in that time.

MMMMM

That was then. As result of the drought last year and the year before,
prices are now back up to the 2004 level or higher.
