=================
Hi Michael,

ML> that had positive cash flow, and not by much. Boston.
RH> Is that the usual history of orchestras or is it just the times we
 RH> live in?

ML> Orchestras come and go, but their position is even more tenuous
ML> today, because the audience is shrinking fast, and even though
ML> the audience that remains is relatively affluent, the amount of
ML> financial clout lessens by the year. Music, especially serious
ML> music, has always been a harsh taskmaster, but it's much worse
 ML> today.

And society as a whole suffers a loss because of it. I'd much rather sit
thru several hours of that music genre than 5 minutes (or less) of a lot
of the stuff that is called music today.

ML> By the way, I had dinner with the drummer for Herb Alpert and
ML> Sergio Mendes, who just performed with the "Catingub Orchestra,"

He must have been interesting to talk to. I know Herb Alpert sort of
just faded off the music scene but Sergio Mendes, I think, is still
going strong. I used to listen to the former a lot but rarely the
latter.

ML> which is the name for the Honolulu Pops when it gets hired for
ML> odd jobs, thus avoiding the cash flow problems that have pushed
ML> the parent group to the brink. Breaking news, though: apparently
ML> the orchestra avoided bankruptcy this week after getting a huge
ML> (7 figure) bailout allowing it to make its payroll. Though I have
ML> had a little inside info, this (and the donor's identity) should
ML> be public by the time I can get this upload to Doc's.

I've not heard anything but I suppose if I went to the "Advertiser"s web
site I would know. I thought that paper was not the greatest--until I
moved here and started getting the Savannah paper.

ML> Ah, yes, now I recall the box, the smell on opening the
 ML> box, the taste.
RH> And they freeze well too.

ML> So they do. I can taste them now.

I can too. Too bad we didn't get any this year.

RH> Nice, on a hot summer
RH> day, to pull out a frozen Thin Mint and enjoy it. (G)

ML> My problem is that to fix the event in my memory I'd have to
ML> repeat it for maybe a dozen iterations ...

At least a dozen, if not 2 dozen.

ML> When I read this, I thought to myself, bread is perfectly
ML> fine stuff, but I don't knead it.
RH> But we all need it, in some form or other. (G)

ML> So Frank Perdue has an audience with the Pope, and he asks
ML> if the Church would be willing to accept a billion dollar
ML> donation, only there's one small favor to go with that. So
ML> Silence from the other end of the phone. Finally, the advisor
ML> answers, "but what will we tell the Pepperidge Farm account?"

Something's rather fowl there in the Vatican. (G)

 ML> COCK-A-LEEKIE
ML> cat: Scot, chicken, main, soup
 ML> serves: 6 to 8

 ML> Reserve two chopped leeks.

ML> Put fowl pieces, herbs, bacon, bones, and leeks in saucepan with
ML> water. Simmer 2-3 hr, covered, until meat is cooked. If necessary,
ML> top up sparingly with water. Salt and pepper to taste, then strain.
ML> Remove beef and veal bones.

What, you don't start out the way Graham Kerr did once? After he
realised what he'd said, the whole place cracked up and they cut away to
a commercial break--fast.

Catch you later,
Ruth
