DS> That clicking or tapping response is usually something you can turn
DS> off. You just have to poke around in the settings. It is usually the
DS> first thing I do on a laptop. My fingers cannot keep from tapping as
DS> they move the mouse pointer around.

This is a different phenomenon from the tapping the pad thing:
this is the computer reading my hand simply resting on the computer
itself (on the left side, beneath the zxc keys) as a mouse click.

ML> Averatec. Remember the brand name and avoid it.
DS> I have one just about like yours. You might have even used it the
DS> last time you were here. It has been working fine for two or three
 DS> years, no complaints.

Next time I will have to go for durability as well as lightness.
Cheapness may have to take a back seat.

This Averatec has proven not to be too sturdy - it has cracks;
screws have fallen out (one into the interior, where it periodically
shorts something out); and the metal plating has worn off, with the
underlying substance apparently plastic (in contradiction to the
advertisements about the product, which says something like titanium).
If I didn't know that it was made in Taiwan I'd have guessed that it
was made in China.

=
ML> dairy product in it, and boy is that torture. Murphy dictates
ML> that this happens before concerts more often than any other time.
DS> The Murphy I married would never have dictated that for you:-}} But
DS> somehow, I can imagine what you mean and how you must feel when it
 DS> happens.

Your Murphy's law pertains only to you! I'm sorry to say that my
Murphy's law is from a less benevolent Murphy, from the distant past.

DS> It uses a solid state "hard drive", i.e. and SDHC card. My computer
DS> has a 4Gig internal card. I bought an 8Gig SDHC card which I leave in
DS> a reader slot all of the time. It also has three USB ports, wireless,
DS> and an ethernet port. It does not have a modem. You could play a
DS> CD/DVD from an external USB player.

Just did a search for SDHC card and was flabbergasted to find
that one now can store 32GB in a chip the size of a postage
stamp. Wikipedia claims that the theoretical limit in the
specification is even higher - 2TB, or "that should be enough
for anybody." At that rate, the text of every book ever written
(estimated at 32M books by the New York Times, that number
probably pulled out of the air for calculation's sake) could
be stored in a Kool-Aid packet. Using the official specification,
this information could be stored in a shoe box or two.

Reminds me of the time Mark Twain attended a church service;
afterward the preacher, quite full of himself, asked him how
he liked the sermon. Twain allowed that it was a thing of beauty,
but asserted that he'd seen a book that contained every word of
that sermon! The preacher was deflated and not a little put out:
he challenged Twain to produce the book, which he promised to
send along. Some days later the preacher received a large
package in the mail, postage due. He tore it open impatiently,
only to find ... an unabridged dictionary.

MMMMM----- Recipe via UNREGISTERED Meal-Master (tm) v8.04

Title: Roasted Onion & Garlic Soup
 Categories: Bon appetit, Soups
      Yield: 4 Servings

      3 lg Onions (unpeeled)
      8 lg Garlic cloves (unpeeled)
      2 ts Plus 2 T olive oil
5 c (or more) canned vegetable
           -broth
      3 Fresh thyme sprigs OR
  1 1/2 ts Dried
3/4 c Diced peeled russet potato
           -(about 4 oz)
           Croutons

Preheat oven to 325'F. Mix whole onions, garlic cloves and 2 t olive
oil in baking pan. Roast until garlic and onions are tender, about 30
minutes for garlic and 1 1/2 hours for onions. Cool. Squeeze garlic
out of skin and mash. Peel onions and slice.

Heat remaining 2 T olive oil in heavy large saucepan over medium
heat. Add onions and saute 15 minutes. Stir in garlic. Add 5 C
vegetable broth and thyme; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 15
minutes. Add diced potato and simmer until tender, about 15 minutes.
Cool mixture slightly. Discard thyme sprigs. Puree soup in batches in
processor. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)

Return soup to saucepan. Bring to simmer, thinning with more broth, if
desired. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Ladle soup into bowls,
  sprinkle with croutons and serve.
