Well, it's not exactly during "the season", more during a lull in
things, at least.  And the foodstuffs donation is done year-round,
rather quietly, but consistently...  A brother-in-law of mine does the
pick-up from Wegmans for his church's cupboard.

Hadn't seen it, but I guess, sadly, I'm not terribly surprised.  It's
one of the things that Habitat for Humanity is trying to mitigate.

I can sorta see having the push once or twice a year... people being
what they are, many wouldn't donate regularly if it was always there. 
By making a big deal about it, probably more people are encouraged to be
part of it.  But, it would* also be nice if there was an on-going plan
for people who'd just as soon be a part of the program all year round. 
And/or a dropbox for non-perishables near the door, even, where you
could just buy a few extra things and drop them off on your way out.

We have a homeless mission here in Rochester that does make special
appeals at certain times of the year, but also has a few extra appeals
throughout the year, for the summer, fall, etc... not just Easter,
Christmas and Thanksgiving...  as the need is there all year round.
