NB>> Yeah, right... :) Over in MEMORIES, we've had the dog/cat wars, and
NB>> the chocolate (Nestle vs Ovaltine vs Hershey etc) wars... and more...
NB>> But almost always done in a friendly fashion... :)

ML> If only all wars were as civilized as ours. Reminds me of the
ML> south sea island where it is said that wars are fought in a
ML> peculiar fashion: each tribe goes into a killing frenzy - of
ML> its own livestock. The tribe that kills more livestock wins
ML> the war. Thus, the group that wants more to win wins. After
ML> the carnage, everyone gets together and has a big old feast.

That's an interesting take, too.. :) And they are probably referred to
as savages... ;)

ML>> It's not just the malt, it's how you treat the malt. In the case of
ML>> Guinness, it's roasted dark, getting rid of some of the sugars (good
ML>> for me) and imparting an almost burned caramelly taste.
NB>> So, are you saying that to my tastes, the way the malt was treated is
NB>> what ruins beer for me? I guess that could be another theory. :)

ML> As Guinness is hopped at a very moderate level, I think the
ML> blackening of the malt is the most likely candidate. It imparts
ML> a chocolatiness that some like but a hint of bitterness that
 ML> others don't.

Is the malt blackened for other beers, too? Or is this just an
explanation for why the dark beers, even with less hops, are still
something I can't like? I've wondered for years why I never could
develop a taste for ANY beer...

NB>> time that I did, I'd just had my first of 10 iron infusion treatments,
NB>> and the iron dripping in reminded me so strongly of my college
NB>> friend's favorite drink (the Rusty Nail, made of scotch and scotch
NB>> liqueur, of which I'd had a sip, before developing my taste for
NB>> scotch), that I needed to have a nip when I got home, my tastebuds
 NB>> were that set! :)

ML> Talk about interesting ways of having your triggers triggered.
ML> If I liked that drink (which I think is okay, but I prefer my
ML> Scotch straight) I'd be after one every time I went into an old
ML> house or rode on a train!

I see I wasn't clear. I didn't go for the Rusty Nail (although
sometimes even a straight Scotch is reminiscent of the taste)... I went
for my good stuff at home... straight... It only happened for the first
infusion, too. For the next nine, I didn't have any side effects. (G)
But it was* a very interesting side effect on the first infusion! ;)

ML> We just had a tot of Glenmorangie 18 - pretty fine stuff -
ML> my contribution was the Lismore no-age-designated (said to be
ML> a 7), which though good was not in the same league (nor
ML> pricewise - it cost 1/6 as much and came with a nifty little
 ML> sampling glass).

When I first developed a taste for Scotch, my then-boyfriend liked the
top blendeds, like Chivas and JWBlack and Pinch, so that's what I drank.
Some years later, a fellow scotch drinker friend of mine discovered
Glenlivet, and had to share the experience with me. (grin) The rest is
history, I guess... ;) I won't go back to the blendeds unless there is
no other option and I feel the need to imbibe something similar with a
friend... obviously at some not-really-up-to-snuff place. Usually I
just pass in that case, though... ;)
