DS> My desktop windows XP machine will boot from a CDROM.

Unfortunately, this thing didn't even come with a CD-ROM boot
disc, else I wouldn't have thought to ask about such issues.

   It does not
DS> boot from the USB port, but perhaps I could alter the setup to allow it
DS> if I wanted to. The ASUS machine will boot from the USB port.

I checked the setup on it, and the first boot device is a CD/DVD
drive, the second a removable device, and only the third the HDD.
So every boot requires a system check for the optical and the
USB port before the actual boot. I was chicken to change this just
now, but unless someone hollers at me here not to do it, I will
in fact do so.

DS> chili person now is Dave Drum, who has participated in, has won, and
 DS> has judged chili contests.
 ML> He takes a more moderate view, eating chili with or without beans;
ML> on the other hand, he's pretty extreme on the subject of how to
 ML> spell the stuff.
DS> I hope that he makes it to the picnic and cooks some chili (or chilli)
 DS> for us all.

That would be fun. It would be good to see him and Georgia again.

ML> Anyhow, if CO is driven out of the meat, where does it go? I guess
 ML> the cook breathes it?
DS> Does it perhaps combine with the oxygen in the air to turn into CO2?
 DS> That sounds like a question for our resident chemist:-}}

I can't speak with any authority, but though that double bond
must be pretty strong, it can't last forever, otherwise the
stuff would stick around until the concentration was such as
to poison us all. I'd guess that solar energy eventually
pummels the stuff into submission.

ML> There was a reasonable selection of wines under $50. Unlike the
DS> Price has to get a good bit under $50 to be "reasonable" to us. All
DS> in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

It was the selection that was reasonable; the prices were by and
large not reasonable. I think that the under-$50 wines were in
the 3x retail range (which is not reasonable), but there were
several of these in enough wine categories so one would have a
reasonable chance of a decent pairing with all the foods.

The prices went into the 4 figures, which is what daunted our
Mr. Weller.

   Ice Box Cookies

Ice box cookies are a boon for the busy person because they can be
prepared in advance and stored in the freezer until needed. Just slice and
bake when desired, and you have a great home made cookie.

If you like, use whole wheat flour and add 1/2 cup ground peanuts to the
  dough.

In a large bowl, cream the shortening and peanut butter, blending well.
Add the honey, mixing it in thoroughly. Gradually blend in sugar. Beat in
  egg and vanilla.

Sift together the flour with baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir the
dry ingredients into the creamed mixture. Stir in the raisins, if using.
Shape in a roll. Wrap in waxed paper and chill thoroughly.

Preheat oven to 350F. Cut chilled dough into thin slices and bake on
greased cookie sheets for 10-12 minutes.
