==================
ML> I was unaware it was that many. That puts it even beyond the heart
ML> attack and cancer range, no?
GJ> As Dale pointed out, due to my ignoring the presence of an independent
GJ> variable (introduction of seatbelts and puff bags) when extrapolating
GJ> from 1960s figures. I was out by a factor of two.

Can it be that your Ozzie disdain for this country is based
partially on 1960s attitudes? Okay, you've been here since,
but then your own views are more moderate than those of, say,
your non-coal-gas-affected colleague.

ML> Having a transportation system that didn't rely on cars wouldn't be
ML> a bad idea; making the cars safer is also not that bad of an idea.
GJ> As cost is the main mover in such matters, world fuel price increases
GJ> will result in greater effort being spent on more fuel efficient means
GJ> of transport than cars - or jet planes. Roll on the trains and
GJ> trolley-buses, running on nuclear generated electricity!

In many respects I'm with you, but not until the problem of
human error is conquered will I be comfortable with substantial
reliance on nuclear-generated electricity. The first step would
be to pay plant operators commensurate with their responsibilities
- attracting a more careful and diligent employee base than the
power companies now tend to get. Also, careful design might be a
good idea.

GJ> used coal gas for cooking. That contains a large proportion of CO and
GJ> H2. Before it was lit, all that CO poured into the kitchen
GJ> atmosphere, but it didn't harm me. This toxicity was well known, and
ML> Are we completely sure of that?
GJ> By comparing my mental state with people who grew up in places outside
GJ> the influence of coal gas, for example Kevin, I can see that I am very
 GJ> normal indeed.

Uh huh.

GJ> been deep-fried. Apparently marinated first, then quickly cooked in
GJ> hot oil to crunchiness. They really did look like dead spiders, but
ML> Perhaps they were in fact dead spiders, which are supposed to
ML> taste pretty good anyhow. Deep-fried big baby octopuses would
ML> probably be kind of mushy inside.
GJ> It is easy to tell arthropods from cephalopods, by the joints, or lack
GJ> of same. The bodies were tender and tasty.

Ah - from your previous scenario I imagined they were fried to
unrecognizable crunchiness. Actually, I'd expect crunchy-fried
spiders to taste like crab and crunchy-fried octopus to taste
like squid.

GJ> The rice shown on Australian TV being supplied to the Burmese needy
GJ> was all labelled "Product of Australia". Doubtless your TV would show
GJ> donations as coming from USA.

No doubt. One does like to feel good about one's country sometimes.

GJ> The Japanese response to the major disasters of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
GJ> was to invent instant noodles as a source of nourishment which was
GJ> easy to make and transport, and required very little fuel to prepare.
GJ> Recently these noodles were considered to be the most important
GJ> Japanese invention of the 20th century.

Those and the shinkansen. As I recall, Mr. Ramen (not his real name)
died recently and was universally mourned.

GJ> Title: Naoyoshi Sasaki's Basic Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki

My buddy Jack, who oversaw the rebuilding of Hiroshima, also
died recently. His widow just sent me an e-mail asking for advice
on how to dispose of his viola, which has been appraised at over
$500000. Giving it to me, I understand, is not an option!

                      White Chocolate Raspberry Tart

Recipe By : 365 Great Chocolate Desserts - ISBN 0-06-016537-5
Serving Size : 12 Preparation Time :1:11
Categories : Chocolate

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 Stick Unsalted Butter, Plus 3 Tbs -- softened
     1/4 C Sugar
   1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
   1 C Flour
12 Oz White Chocolate, Imported -- chopped
     1/3 C Heavy Cream
1 3/4 C Raspberries, Fresh (Do Not Sub. Frozen) -- rinsed and
drained
     3/4 C Pistachio Nuts -- coarsely chopped

1. Make crust: In a food processor, combine 1 stick butter, sugar, and
vanilla. Process until well blended. Add flour and process just until
dough forms a ball.
2. Press into bottom and up sides of a 9 1/2- or 10-inch fluted metal tart
pan with removable bottom. Refrigerate 15 to 20 mins.
3. Preheat oven to 350F. Bake crust 18 to 20 mins, or until golden. Let
cool.
4. Meanwhile, prepare filling and topping. In a 1-qt glass bowl, combine
white chocolate and remaining 3 Tbs butter, cut up. In a small glass bowl,
heat cream in a microwave on High 60 to 70 secs, or until boiling. Pour
hot cream over white chocolate and butter, stirring until melted and
smooth. If necessary, heat mixture in microwave on Medium 1 min to melt
white chocolate completely. Let cool 15 mins.
5. Place raspberries in cooled crust. Sprinkle 1/2 cup pistachios over
berries. Carefully pour white chocolate mixture on top, spreading evenly.
Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup pistachios in 1-inch-wide ring around outer
edge of tart. Refrigerate until set, at least 2 hours. Before serving,
remove side of pan and, using a sharp knife, cut tart into slices.
