 Mom was good about that, when we bought a house in
 Alabama with a good-sized back yard, as is customary
 in that region. She kept putting in fruit trees in
 the first several years, and other stuff like
 strawberries, raspberries and rhubarb (failed, too
 hot down there for rhubarb). Eventually she had peaches,
 4 kinds of plums, 2 kinds of pears, a yucky apple tree
 (didn't bear true to the variety it was advertised as,
 but after several years, you can't exactly return it
 for a refund), 3 cherry trees and about 6 blueberry
 bushes. I think after I left for college she even put
 in a fig tree and tried to grow grapes. It was sort
 of fun for a while, we kids could go out in the yard
 and just graze around on what was available. But now
 she is in her late 70s, with an artificial hip,
 arthritis and emphysema, and she can't take care of
 all that any more. So she keeps asking my brother to
 come over with the chain saw to take out more fruit
 trees. A pity, but she was tired of having wormy,
 rotten peaches all over the lawn. And it makes
 things easier for her hired lawn guy to cut the grass.

      Title: Pickled Peaches
 Categories: Easy, Fruits, Desserts
      Yield: 4 Servings

      1 cn Cling peach halves with
           -syrup
      1 t  Whole cloves
      1 t  Allspice (whole?)
    1/2 c  Brown sugar
    1/2 c  Vinegar

     Empty a can of cling peach halves with syrup into a saucepan. Add
  the spices, sugar and vinegar. Boil until the sugar dissolves, then
  simmer about 8 minutes. Let cool in the syrup.

     My Mom sent this one to me when I was having trouble finding
  "Spiced Peaches" in the local groceries. I always looked forward to
  these as a light dessert item after a holiday meal, say at Christmas,
  Thanksgiving or Easter. They might compliment a Ham, especially. Joan
