Hi Burt,

On (02 Jun 08) BURTON FORD wrote to STEVE HAFFLY...

I didn't see this when I scanned for personals as my system is set for
Stephen vice Steve. I assume you saw my reply to Dale's note to you (or
will see it separately from this message).

BF> I asked Dale to review his EEPC, and he suggested I wait
BF> until the Picnic and check it out then. But the Picnic
BF> is almost 2 months away and I would like to at least think
BF> about buying one before then.

Good plan.

BF> Dale also mentioned you have the newer, bigger one.
BF> Can you give me a review? In general?

I am really glad I got the EeePC 900 which has an 8.9" screen. It also
has more such as 1Gb RAM, 20 Gb storage (4Gb for system, 16 Gb for user)
and a 1.3 MP web camera with microphone. Like Dale's, mine also runs
Xandros Linux. A Windows XP version is available, but the second drive
is then limited to 12Gb.

One of the niftiest features is the multi-touch touchpad. It functions
similar to the touch screen on an iPhone where you can use two fingers
to zoom in and out on pictures, documents, etc. It also uses a
two-finger scroll that is the handiest thing.

I am impressed with it, and would highly recommend someone look at it,
or the newer 901 with the Intel Atom processor which was just announced
in Taiwan. It will be to the US later this year, although I don't know
just when. It will have more features, but will also be more expensive.
Since it has come out, I expect the price on the 900 and 700 series to
be cut though.

BF> And in particular, how hard is the keyboard to use?

Not as hard as it would seem at first. I have adapted quite well and
can type about as fast on it as I can on the full-sized keyboard.

BF> And how much work potential does it have? Could I sit
BF> in our living room and work the Echo with some comfort?
BF> Does it get hot on your lap? I would probably use it
BF> plugged in most all the time.

1. Quite a bit. It has the OpenOffice suite and other apps for web,
email and much more.

2. Yes. I would suggest setting it on something rather than directly
on your lap though.

3. Yes. It has a fan, but it does get warm. They keyboard seems to be
used as part of the heat sink, so it gets warm too. Profesional Point,
being a DOS program, doesn't play well and puts a load on the
processor, so it also draws down the battery quicker than other programs
would. Plugging it in is the solution for that though.

BF> How much entertainment value? Could I enjoy idly
BF> surfing the 'Net on it?

The 900's screen is better suited than the 700's as it runs at 1024x600.
Your eyes will probably appreciate the additional space to see more
pages without having to scroll horizonatlly. Unfortunately, I can't do
more than offer to send you a screen shot. You will see it at the
picnic though.

Asus is coming out with a 10" screen model as well. You would have to
check online for information on that. You could also check out some of
the competitors that are hitting the market now, such as MSI Wind, HP
2133, or others announced from Dell or Sony (no information yet).

BF> Would you recommend getting the larger one, like yours?

Yes, but the choice is up to you

BF> Or should I just stick to a larger laptop?

If you don't NEED the small size, then you might be happier with a
larger laptop. My requirements were small, light, and durable. The
solid state drives (no HDD to crash) were a large part of the equation
for me.

BF> Thanks for what ever opinions you can come up with, Steve.

You are quite welcome.

BF> You can E-mail me if you feel more comfortable.

I will send you a screen shot separately.

Regards,

Stephen
