Best wishes to them and hope it works out for them.

For the past few years I've watched a marriage similar to that crash
and burn.  She was 30? years younger than him, he stood by her as she
recovered from substance abuse and then cancer and chemotherapy.  When
his health started to stumble, she decided she needed open spaces again
and off she went.

He was a hell of a guy.  My family kind of adopted him - bringing him
over for holidays, or visiting  over to his place and shooting the breeze
while our dogs chased each other through his orchard.

He had his share of troubles.  Never quite got over his wife walking out
and was so slow in pursuing a divorce that it never happened.  Had some
financial difficulties near the end, what with prices going up and his
health going down.  I used to cook a little extra a couple times a week
and bring him a few meals he could stash in the fridge in his office
so at least he didn't have to live on Stouffer's and Subway.

I hadn't heard from him in a week or so and was fixing to drive over
to his place and see what was going on when I got a call over his phone
line (caller ID) from his almost-ex telling me he'd had a heart attack
and died the week before.  

No memorial service, no funeral, no more than a two-line announcement
in an out-of-state paper.  She had him cremated and the ashes scattered.
She's back living in the house he designed and built; there never was a
divorce, you know.

His problems are over and that's as fair as life gets I reckon.  They
both got what they wanted. 

You remember what you were saying about kind of hoping I had the 
right line on the afterlife?  Me too, because if I am, his springer
spaniel was waiting for him with a shooting jacket and a Webley and 
Scott 12 ga over-and-under, and right now he's moseying across an
upland pasture while the springer noses up some partridge.

Heh.  That was a hell of a tangent.  I'm going to click "Send Message"
anyway.
