My parents never let go anything ... in third grade I once took
a spelling test, and I spelled Indian "Indain"; that was the only
thing I got wrong, so I brought the paper home triumphantly with
the 95 A+ on the front, but they ridiculed me and ridiculed me.
My father never let me forget that, bringing it up for years
afterward. Latterly I realized that he seriously got off on that
kind of thing and would periodically deliberately make a mistake
so he could pounce. And my mother, poor thing, used to regularly
sing to me "anything you can do I can do better." What gives
these people the notion that they can be parents? Luckily I wasn't
insane enough to believe all the crap they fed me ("We love our
children. Americans don't love their children.") and had a sister,
who was equally bright, as a counterbalance and reality check. We
really should have run off as soon as we had legs. As it was, I
left at 17, never to return until they were old and sick, and to
give me credit, I never lorded anything over them but continued
to take their crap until they died. My sister left at 16 and
essentially never went back.

That's a little unpleasant. I've found that things start tasting like
fish when they're getting colonized with a particular kind of mold.
