Ärende: TAP classes and leftovers [1]
====================================================================
Hi Carol,

 > I know, those "offices" don't leave much room for privacy.

CS> True. Best you can do is stand back 2-3 feet.

And start reading your own paperwork, if waiting to be called. You're
less likely to hear conversation if you're engrosed in the finer points
of military packer's paperwork.

 > CS> place to have it. I think it's funny how it never really freezes.

 > Something in it that keeps it like that?

CS> Salt maybe? Not sure really. I do know it's all organic stuff so
CS> whatever makes it that way, is natural to it.

Probably the salt or calcium carbonate (limestone) used in a slurry to
make the tofu originally.

CS> If there is a family assistance office, just give them a call and see
CS> if you can hook up with another for a ride. One of the folks in my
CS> class was riding with another and found the link that way. If not
CS> possible, will have to wait.

That's an idea but will probably put it on hold until we get back from
leave. I know, we've got almost a month but I've got other things that
take priority at the moment.

 > I think but can't say 100% that the Army version is 2 weeks.

CS> The priamry aprt is the VA benefits part. 2 weeks feels too long to
CS> me. Perhaps ours is shorter because they intend all to attend about
CS> 12-14 months out, then again 2-3 months before terminal leave.

 > CS> Some of it wont be all that relevant to you, but it wont hurt you to
 > CS> find out how to do a proper job interview or how to write a resume

I know all of that is included..........and a lot more.

 > Or how to feed the family on a extra low budget until the retirement pay
 > kickes in. I coud teach that one. (G)

CS> Naw, Navy class doesnt teach that. They do have a finances section
CS> though taught at lunch break (bring your lunch, extra stuff that

That's where, I think the Army does teach it as part of the transition
program (finances, that is). A low budget meals course wouldn't be a
bad idea tho.

 > I've been self employed at various places. Not made a bundle of money
 > but it's generally been my hours, whenever I want.

CS> They have a resume section specific to that. Also how to start a home
 CS> business.

I knew one guy that retired while we were in AZ went thru a (non
military) course on franchising. He spent quite a bit of money out of
pocket for it but, not as much as if he'd bought a franchise in McD's or
S'way or BK. I guess it was to give him some ideas for potential jobs
after retiring.

 CS> (back to food)

 > I meant using the hot pepper bit as the center, fire ball. That would
 > light up your mouth!

CS> No habaneros for us though!

Nor me either.

 CS> (picnic)

 > CS> I imagine Charlotte will be having fun with everyone. Running around
 > CS> with the dogs too.

 > I expect her to fit in, no trouble. She probably has her own tales to
 > tell about your family cooking, especially if Don tried something unusal
 > while you were on one of your cruises.

CS> Might be! I warn you though, she's missed the 'flock' so much now
CS> that she's uncomfortable if it's mentioned and pretends it never
CS> happened. The school guidance counselor says to let it be as it's a
CS> common reaction when no other kids around her have a relevant memory
CS> and she's a 'singlit'. She will grow out of that, but not super fast.

OK, I'll not mention it. Our girls didn't have that trouble when we came
back from Germany. Could be several reasons--1) sisters, 2) went to a
school with a lot of military kids who had been to Germany, 3) less of a
cultural transition and probably a bunch more.

CS> I took to the counselor to ask as it really threw me when she looked
CS> blank when I made a reference to the kids in Japan. He says it's ok.
CS> For the moment, she's blocking much of her Japan memories because she
 CS> misses it.

Be ready to listen when the flood gates open up. Have you stayed in
contact with any of the military families still over in Japan?

Catch you later,
