Ärende: Cash, The Trouper
=========================
Hi Bj"rn   6/22/08 1:41 PM

rhk->> My dad sang bass,
BF> "Mama sang Tenor. Daddy sang bass"... what song is that from?
bf-> Johnny Cash sticks in mind.

bjf-> Yupp.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGUP8oc9Bgs

[The old timers here have heard this story, so I apologize to them.
They have my permission to skip this.]

Thanks Bj"rn. I enjoyed hearing Johnny sing that song again.
While I was at it I looked at a few others of his songs. I
watched one that he sang with the Statler Brothers.

That took me back to years ago, when Shirley and I went to see
him in nearby Rochester NY, before he got famous on TV,. We
couldn't get anybody to go with us to see "some country Singer"

It was at the Auditorium Theater, aging even then, and there was
some trouble with the sound system while the Statler Brothers were
opening for Johnny Cash. They had to start over a couple times
when the sound quit. They weren't famous either. Then one of
them stormed off the stage to see what was going on. He came
roaring back and yelled out words to the effect that "We don't
have to put up with stuff like this!" And all four of them
stormed off the stage, leaving it empty!

We in the audience sat stunned. We figured that the show was over
as was our 35 mile one way trip to see Johnny. Then after a few minutes of
quiet, Johnny Cash came out with an acoustic guitar, sat on the edge
of the stage with his feet hanging over and said "Tell me if you
can't hear me in the back there."

The longest standing ovation I have ever taken part in followed
that. When the audience finally settled down, Johnny gave an
hour and a half performance with just him and his guitar.
We loved The trouper Johnny Cash, and hated the Statler Brothers
ever since.... a bunch of pompous gits.

The "Beef cube steaks" below are not cubed pieces of steak.
I say this only because I don't know if you have "cube steak."
Cube steak is a cut of beef, usually top round or top sirloin,
tenderized by pounding the meat with a heavy cube of wood or
metal. Now-a-days I guess they use some machine that kills
the steak with the "death of the thousand knives."

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Country-Fried Steak
 Categories: Diner
      Yield: 1 Servings

    3/4 c  Flour
    1/2 ts Salt
    1/2 ts Pepper
      4 Beef cube steaks (5 oz.
           -ea.)
    1/4 c  Plus 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil
      1 c  Chopped onion
      1 c  Water
      1 c  Milk

  Combine first 3 ingredients; measure out and reserve 1/4 cup flour
  mixture. Place remaining 1/2 cup flour mixture in a shallow dish.
  Pound steaks to 1/4" thickness; dredge in flour mixture, coating well
  on both sides and pressing flour into meat. Heat 3 Tbsp. oil in a
  large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Dredge steaks again in
  any remaining flour mixture and fry until browned on both sides,
  adding 1 or 2 Tbsp. additional oil to skillet if needed. Remove
  steaks and set aside.

  Add onion to skillet, and saute' until lightly browned. Add water,
  stirring to loosen clinging particles.  Return steaks to skillet;
  cover and simmer 30 minutes, or until tender. Remove steaks,
  reserving drippings in skillet. Add reserved 1/4 cup flour mixture to
  skillet, stirring until smooth. Cook until lightly browned, stirring
  constantly. Stir in milk with a wire whisk. Cook, stirring
  constantly, until thickened. Return steaks to skillet, turning to
  coat with sauce; simmer until hot.
