 The common names for freshwater fish seem to be wildly
 variable in this country. In my area of Alabama,
 fishermen would speak of landing crappies AND bluegills,
 shellcrackers (and rarely pumpkinseeds) the last three
 being sunfish. I had the impression their crappies were
 much slenderer than sunfish, and more silvery. The
 sunfish I caught were nice and chunky, so that a 6-incher
 was worth keeping and eating if that was the point
 (though you'd want a few of those). I have caught a few
 up to about 9-inches long, and because of the meatiness
 of them, well over a pound. Great panfish, and I don't
 consider them bony! Of course, they have skeletons, but
 the bones are well-defined and don't protrude through
 big sections of the flesh. I'd just fork my fish off
 the skeleton.

 As I noted, if they are confused with bass, trout
 and perch, they are much slenderer than the chunky
 sunfish.

 I can't speak to eating crappie, I don't think my family
 caught many of them. We fished from shore, while I think
 crappie were often taken by guys with boats fishing in
 the deeper parts of the lakes. But I remember them being
 considered "good eatin'".
