========================================================================
Hey Ruth!
->
-> -> I do the same basic thing for peaches as well. Really ripe ones have no
-> -> trouble shedding their skin; it's the ones you think are ripe but aren't
-> -> quite that give you grief. BTW, have a good number of tomatoes on the
-> -> Roma plants now, with more to come.
->
-> hn> We did the same, with peaches as we
-> hn> did for tomatoes..Peach time at my
->  hn> grandparent's farm was a time when
-> hn> all the aunts got together with my
-> hn> Grandmother and put up peaches,
-> hn> some jam, some canned.
->
-> Sounds like she had the trees on her property to be able to do so. Must
-> have been fun with all your aunts putting up the peaches--hopefully the
-> kitchen was sizeable. (G)
->
Probably ( going from kid's sized memory
here) 10 acres of peach, 10acres of pecan,
less than an acre of apple, same for pear...
that's all the fruit trees I remember, black walnut
trees weren't a "grove" but there were several
real big ones around the house. The house
was rebuilt on the orginal foundation of the
Plantation house that was destroyed during
the "recent unpleasantness with the north" as
my grandmother used to say (grin). The kitchen
was HUUUUGE! The kitchen table (the one we
ate at most) was about 20 feet long, with
chairs on the "kitchen" side (for grownups)
and a series of long benches on the "wall"
side..where we kids all packed in. There
was also in the center of the kitchen a
big wooden "butcher block" table where
meats would be cut and such. There was
a gas stove and a big old woodburning
stove as well. Double sinks AND a pump
right out of the counter!! The sinks did
have running water by the time I was
around..but the pump still worked! and
in the summer if you wanted Cold water
you went and got it from the pump!

-> -> about 6:45. We'd defrosted a small steak which he grilled to go with
-> -> swiss chard and a slight varient on a German tomato salad. Good eating
-> -> with little fuss. BTW, the tomato salad is one I posted years ago,
-> -> generally useing red wine vinegar in it. Tonight I used balsamic and it
-> -> was really good.
->
-> hn> tonight when I got home from the ballpark
-> hn> we had a cup of soup and a slice of quiche.
-> hn> Both were real good and very welcome!!
->
->
-> Sounds good to me. Sometimes the simplest things are the most
-> satisfying.
->
Yep! Had a day game at the ballpark on
Memorial Day, and when I got home
Anne made dinner for me! Hamburger
patty and brussels sprouts! boy was
it Goooood!
I have today off from the ballpark and
will go back for a day game tomorrow
and have thursday off then work straight
through tull 5 june, being boss two of
those games.
->
-> ->  hn> Yep, take a break...Allergies getting
-> ->  hn> to you as well?
->
-> -> Probably a bit of allergies but hot and humid weather the last few days
-> -> hasn't helped. Had a good thunderstorm line blow thru earlier this
-> -> afternoon after I'd made bread and finished the chutney. I've got to do
-> -> some more baking tomorrow morning, weather guy is saying it should be
-> -> cool (low to mid 80s) instead of the low to mid 90s we've had most of
-> -> the week.
->
-> hn> Still nice and cool here, temps barely getting
-> hn> into the high 50's and rarely into the 60's.
->  hn> Perfect weather!!
->
-> We're headed for another hot and humid (both quite high) week. I'm done
-> with the big cooking stuff for now but revving up the sewing machines,
-> serger, etc.
->
Had a couple of showers this morning
but mostly just cloudy and very nice
weather...60F for a high.

-> ->  hn> Busy kid!!
->
-> -> Better busy than bored.
->
->  hn> I never was bored, I always found
-> hn> interesting things to do (grin).
->
-> Different era, different culture. He's a city kid, raised in the instant
-> (or less time) gratification time. He was sort of overwhelmed at my
-> folks last summer--all the wide open play space he could have and no
-> electronic games, etc. Computers there were for work, not play. You're a
-> military child of a couple of generations ago but with enough "farm
-> raising" you knew how to entertain yourself.
->
Yep, and as a parent I would be
(and was) very cautious about letting
my kids just "go out and play" without
any adult keeping an eye on them! it's
 a very different world than the one
I grew up in.

-> ->  hn> You'd be surprised, some of those
-> -> hn> rents they pay are higher than in
-> -> hn> some of the "better" parts of
-> ->  hn> town!
->
-> -> In proportion to what they get, it wouldn't surprise me. In HI, when
-> -> military housing was privatised, we paid about twice the rent for about
-> -> half the square footage we had in GA. Better kitchen in HI, plus housing
-> -> that would withstand a strong hurricane better than the GA place. Here
I
-> -> think our rent is on the low side for the area but we can easily pay it
-> -> in the months Steve does not get GI Bill housing allowance.
->
->  hn> Here it's often a matter of landlords
-> hn> taking advantage of the latinos. Some of
-> hn> it it language based and some of it plays upon
->  hn> their fears.
->
-> I've read about that in this area as well. Several groups have filed
-> suit recently to ensure courts have interpreters for them so they get a
-> fair deal. It's mostly, as you say, the language and fear factors that
-> make them so susceptable to rip offs.
->
Many of the landlords are afraid of the
high crime rates in the latino community.
Whether it's real or perceived, they either
want to gouge those who can't defend
themselves, or protect their investment
in real estate. In either case, the tenants
are the ones paying the real price. A lot
of the illegals pay simply because they
don't have to supply documentation
to the slum lords who are taking advantage
of the fact that the tenants won't dare
go to the law on them.

-> ->  hn> It could be, there's a lot of stress
-> -> hn> here too at the moment so that's
-> ->  hn> an added factor.
->
-> -> Definately! Are things settling out in NY or is that partly the reason
-> -> for stress?
->
-> hn> there are several other things as well
-> hn> that are ongoing and unresolved at
->  hn> this point.
->
-> I understand.
->
Hopefully we'll have some information
to share either this week or next.

-> -> hn> Still I'm hoping that it will start
-> ->  hn> to show a pattern (and a decline in
-> ->  hn> blood sugar).
->
-> -> Keep testing, noting your settings, what you've had/not had to eat,
->
->
-> >> CONTINUED IN NEXT MESSAGE <<
->
chat with you soon!
