Wow.  Those are the very complaints I hear (or heard, LOL, see below) 
about the KFCs in my area.  The nearest Popeye's to me is a 20 minute
drive north in Chicopee MA, and yet I could drive there, order food, and
drive it home to enjoy with the family in less time than it would take
me to go a quarter-mile away to the local KFC, where the service crawled
and the place was filthy.

These days, there are no KFCs in my immediate market area. The former
franchisee had stopped paying his franchise dues to the company a 
couple of years ago, and his corporate overlords finally forced him to
shut down his restaurants after a long and protracted court battle.

Thing is, up until the past year or so ago the service and quality at
his restaurants wasn't any worse than most other places (damning with
faint praise) but when it seemed to become obvious that he was fighting
a losing battle, service and cleanliness and building maintenance at his
places started to slide.

I feel nominally bad for the people who were thrown out of work by the
closing, but only a little because they either weren't very good at
working in fast food, or they were deliberately slacking because they
thought the end was near. (I do however feel genuinely bad for the few
really exceptional staffers who were fighting the tide at their own
restaurants and trying to do the right thing for customers.)
