It is interesting to look into what was used for lighting, fuel and
lubricants before mineral oils came into the picture.  Whale and seal
and vegetable oils were used a lot in temperate and cold climates,
while in the tropics coconut and palm oil were popular.  Steam engines
required lubricating, and in Southern Australia the oil from mutton
birds was used for that purpose.  Animal and vegetable oils worked
better than the original pure mineral oil under extreme conditions of
heat and pressure, which is why castor oil was still the preferred
lubricant for racing engines in the '40s and '50s.  I have used
coconut oil as a fuel in diesel vehicles, and it has the great
advantage of producing a much more pleasant exhaust aroma than diesel.

Yes, the bonneted prime movers give a much more comfortable ride.  The
COE configuration is better for tippers and vehicles required to
operate in confined spaces.

Some types of trucks enjoyed popularity, and then suddenly disappeared
completely.  I never knew what caused that to happen to the Commer
"Knocker", a flat 3 cylinder, 6 piston 2-stroke diesel engine with 2
crankshafts geared together and a roots blower providing scavenge air.
Inlet and exhaust ports were controlled by the pistons, and as the
cranks were slightly out of phase, the exhaust always opened and
closed before the inlet ports.  I think it was a Junkers design. They
had plenty of power, and were easily recognised by their sound. As far
as I know, their only fault was negligeable engine braking.

  Dende, a thick dark orange palm oil, high in saturated fat, is an
  essential ingredient in Bahian cooking. Of African origin and popular
  in Brazilian cuisine it is part of the The Holy Trinity of Bahian
  cooking: coconut milk, dende and malagueta chile peppers.
  
  Try to find the Brazilian palm oil which is lighter in taste and
  texture than it's West African counterpart. Unfortunately, it is the
  West African that is most readily available in Latin American, West
  Indian and African markets in the United States.
  
  Or use half the amount of the West African palm oil and substitute
  vegetable oil for the other half.
  
  You can replace with a mixture made from 1 cup vegetable oil and 3
  tablespoons annatto seeds that have been soaked for 12 hours.

  the oil palm, elaesis guineensis.  It has an unusual and powerful
  taste. "It should be pointed out that it is necessary for the novice
  gourmet to acquire a taste for it.  Once his palate has become used
  to this exotic flavour, he may be willing to go along with the
  Brazilian poets and also sing the praises of their vatapa', moqueca
  or other famous dishes using dende." It is hard to find outside
  Brazil, where it is known as palm oil or red palm oil, except for
  some countries in Africa and S.E. Asia where it is produced and
  consumed also.
