GJ> The last time I saw a 727 in flight was in in Nauru in 1998.
ML> The last time I flew in one was 4/26/2002 on Delta, which is
ML> well known for using antiquated aircraft.
GJ> I think that by then they were banned from Australian airports because
 GJ> of their smoky exhaust.
ML> Actually, it was noise. Most of the 727s flying recently have
ML> been fitted with JT8D series engines such as made by the father
ML> of CT Ruth and don't produce any smokier exhaust than most other
ML> planes. The 3-in-the-rear configuration and the lack of adequate
ML> hushkits were factors in the demise of the line.

OK, I can understand some people's objection to the noise, which I
thought was wonderful. The best noise I have heard was from a British
Avro Vulcan delta-winged A-bomber at an air show, climbing with full
thrust at a 60 degree angle, with oodles of black smoke. It was
relatively easy to fit the engines of 707s and the like with the
"noise reducers and thrust reversers" (referred to by the pilots as
"thrust reducers and noise reversers"), but much more difficult to do
with the "built-in" jets.

GJ> I stand corrected. Jet A (I think JP1 in UK) is closer to kerosene
GJ> than diesel, but is rather wide cut, and includes volatile, easily
GJ> ignited petroleum fractions. Your president's aircraft uses a fuel
GJ> closer to diesel, which is much less likely to ignite in the event of
 GJ> an accident.

 ML> And what about me?

Just pray that your plane doesn't catch fire! You are more expendable
than your president, so your plane uses the cheaper fuel.

GJ> And some planes had to go back and top up tanks, then return to their
 GJ> places in the queue...
ML> I was at New York in a storm once, and our plane - number
ML> fiftysomething for takeoff - had to do just that. Also, just
ML> a few weeks ago, the same thing happened at the same airport
ML> but in reasonably clear weather. I'm not sure what the excuse
ML> was that time. I thought it would make more sense for the
ML> controllers to call just a few planes at a time to go out
ML> expeditiously to the runway and do their thing. But then, oh,
ML> the wind changed, we have to switch runways, oh, it's raining,
ML> oh, there are turtles on the runway, oh, oh, oh.

When travelling on a UA plane with Channel 9, I have been very
unimpressed by the attitudes of some of the controllers, who when
talking to airline captains sounded rather like school-marms talking
to recalcitrant kiddies.

At Ceduna, on Eyre Peninsular, at the Ceduna Motor Inn, while eating a
fairly ordinary spag bol, I was served a glass of Leasingham 2004
Shiraz, from a bottle which had been opened 2 days before. It was
absolutely magnificent! After that, I had an O'Leary 2003 Shiraz,
which was excellent, but it hadn't had time to blossom like the
Leasingham, so for me it didn't rate as high.
