Baddish news. Billy has C. diff, which is hard to eradicate
and is quite transmissible, so my next trips, largely to
friends who are older or iller, are in some doubt. Not to
mention that the risk to Billy, with his compromised immune
system, is high. He got it at Hershey during his stay for
the futile surgery a couple weeks ago. I am supposed to be
okay if I scrub hard with soap and water every time I come
in contact with him, his possessions, or his food, but the
risk of my catching it is non-negligible. I am not likely
to suffer much from it if I do, but consider how far I go
and the fragile state of many of my friends, and who knows.
So, to topic 2: The march of time, beware.

The score is one former chamber music buddy, strokes
at 50; one former regular date, strokes at 65; Nicholas,
end-stage kidney failure (but he's agreed to go on dialysis).
Burt 4d, stage 3 kidney disease, though that's I figure at
least not end-stage.

On the plus side, my friend Jim, though his prostate cancer
isn't beaten, it's more or less at bay; Lilli's renal failure
has cleared up - creatinine is down to half what it was, so
approaching the normal range, thanks to prednisone; and my
heart failure has improved, with my EF approximately double
what it was before last year's surgery.

I am expecting to hear more news tipping things toward the
plus side - perhaps Clean Dave can check in with a clean
bill of health.

Odd news, perhaps relating to nothing. I've lost my taste
for wine. It all nauseates me. Nicholas was relating to me
how he had opened a bottle of his Chateau Margaux nineteen
sixty whatever, and it was fabulous (he didn't invite me!),
but all I could think was blecch. This Sunday I am going to
challenge my taste buds with a heavy, tannic Rioja just to
see what happens, but I predict the results will not be good.

Heather Watts's boiled lobster
cat: healthy, seafood, ballet
serves: 6

2 Tb peppercorns
6 lemons; halved
4 bay leaves
3 c white wine
12 cloves garlic; mashed
4 Tb fresh tarragon; chopped
4 Tb fresh oregano; chopped
4 Tb fresh thyme; chopped
4 md onions; quartered
2 Tb paprika
2 Tb cayenne
6 lobsters (1.5 lb each)
12 Tb sweet butter; melted

Fill two large pots 2/3 of the way with water. Divide all herbs
and spices between the pots. Bring them to a boil.

Drop 3 lobsters into each pot and cook 10 min. Remove and drain.
Serve with butter on the side.
