There was an exceptionally cute girl (not the bride) dressed in
a bridal gown. She tried to make some kind of contact; I
demurred, at which she called me "crazy," which undoubtedly I was.
It would have ruined my day, though, had I ended up getting some
weird disease or pregnifying someone.

So it depends on the point of view whether it's a shame.

I heard an alternative explanation, which is that the bacteria
membranes are physically damaged by the scrubbing action.

I'm sure it makes toilets smell good, but 99% is a pretty
terrible statistic when it comes to killing microorganisms,
because if it's anywhere like a whole 1% that survives, that's
enough to ensure a continually self-strengthening load of the
critters; and with some of the more virulent ones, a surprisingly
small number suffices to cause disease.

Depends on the cassava. The stuff that grows in South America
has enough cyanogen to be quite troublesome if it isn't treated.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v7.07

      Title: Egg Drop Soup #4
 Categories: Chinese, Soups
   Servings:  4

      2    Eggs
      2 ts Water
      2    Scallions
      1 tb Cornstarch
      3 tb Water
      6 c  Stock
    1/2 ts Sugar
    3/4    To 1 tsp salt
      1 ts Sherry
      1 tb Soy sauce

  Beat eggs & stir in water.  Mince scallions. Blend cornstarch and remaining
  cold water to a paste. Bring stock to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and
  stir in sugar, salt, sherry & soy sauce. Add cornstarch paste & cook,
  stirring, until soup thickens & is smooth. Reduce heat to low. Pour eggs in
  slowly, stirring constantly, until they separate into shreds; then turn off
  heat. Garnish with minced scallions. Serves 4-5.
