==================
ML> That's kind of sad. Did he come back to teach because there was
ML> no other place for him to go, or did he return with the best of
ML> intentions and then succumb to some kind of letdown afterwards?
RH> I think it was because there was no other place for him to go. When my
RH> dad subbed for him one time, he (Dad) was told to give the students
RH> the vocabulary list for the week and go over it with them. This guy had
RH> some rather off the wall definitions; Dad taught the kids how to look
RH> up the real meaning in the dictionary & not take this guy's definitions
 RH> for granted.

It takes some effort to make stuff up, though. What was
in this guy's head?

Dad was rather upset that this guy was teaching--but he
RH> was tenured at that point & couldn't be fired for no good reason. He
RH> also coached some of the sports teams, which is why (IMO) why he was
 RH> kept on the faculty.

My high school biology teacher was the JV football coach. He
wasn't a terrible person, just a little, shall we say, rigid.
We had a test once, one question of which was "Give an example
of a genus-species name." Perfectly sensible question for people
just introduced to the taxonomic system: what was not quite
sensible was that he wanted one answer and one answer only:
Ilex vomitoria, which he had given in lecture as his example:
apparently he liked the name. If you said Homo sapiens or
something, he circled that with a note (but to give him credit
didn't take off).

RH> But, I agree in that one person's Cultural Literacy list may be
 RH> vastly different from another's

The idea is silly, as the compilers just tend to make lists
of stuff they know. The fact that E. D. Hirsch apparently
hired bright Ivy boys to help him out is a suspicious
circumstance in itself. Who's to say that bright Ivy
knowledge is better than grim rapper knowledge, say, or
baseball statistics. It's all shibboleths and the codification
of same.

RH> Adaption is probably the better choice of words than rewrite. but, to
RH> adapt, some rewriting is neccessary.

Pretty much by definition: the alternative, annotation, is
probably way too slow going for most audiences.

ML> the literary merit. Perhaps it could serve as a stepping stone
ML> to the real thing, but how many will find the real thing's
ML> relevancy is a different question.
RH> Depends on the world around them. A lot of teens would relate to
RH> something like Romeo & Juliet a lot more so than Hamlet.

Hamlet might be interesting to the mentally ill or those
who have had to deal with the mentally ill; also to those
from broken homes of various kinds.

RH> As long as you don't mix up key words/phrases--ask for the toilet, not
RH> the bathroom. (G) I would take it out and read over ones most likely
RH> to help several times, doing it several times a day.

That's my point - my rebellious brain is preventing me
from doing so, in an amplification of the manana syndrome.

RH> Remember to ask for "ein Bier", not "drei Bier" at a time. (G)

I never order more than I can lift! Who was it, Miss Piggy,
perhaps, who reminds us never to eat anything bigger than
our head.

Banana upside-down cake
cat: dessert, bigger than my head
yield: 1 9-inch cake

1/2 lb unsalted butter, soften
1/2 c packed light brown sugar
3 ripe firm bananas, sliced
1 1/2 c white sugar
1 Tb vanilla extract
2 eggs
2 c all-purpose flour
1 Tb baking powder
1/2 ts salt
1 c milk

Preheat over to 350F. Grease a 9" baking pan.

Melt one stick of butter and the brown sugar,
mixing constantly until it incorporates and
turns into liquid caramel.

Pour caramel into the cake pan, distribute the
caramel evenly all over the bottom and side of the
pan. Arrange banana slices over the caramel mixture.

In a standing mixer with paddle attachment, mix the
remaining butter and white sugar until light and
fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs, beat until smooth.

In another bowl, sift flour, baker powder and salt.
Add the dry ingredients and milk alternate to
butter mixture.

Pour the batter carefully over the banana layer.
Distributing evenly.

Bake for 50-60 min until golden and a toothpick
inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

Let the cake rest for a bit so that it cools
slightly and the caramel sets to some extent, but
try to invert the cake onto a cake plate while it's
still warm.
